MAMIE CUNNINGHAM Mrs. Mamie Cunningham, aged 50, widow of Wilford Cunningham, died in the family home in Union Township on the Harbor-Edinburg road, Monday at 3:30 p.m. Mrs. Cunningham was born in Neshannock township, April 22, 1883, the daughter of Louis and Bridger (sic.) Murphy Duchez. She is survived by five children: Mrs. Wallace Filer, Pearl, Geraldine, Louis, and Lawrence; a brother, John C. Duchez, of Chicago, Ill.; four sisters: Mrs. C.S. Ward, East Palestine, O.; Mrs. James Ewart, Flushing, L.I.; Mrs. Phil Holler, West Collingwood, N.J.; and Mrs. Ward Miller, Cleveland, O. She was a member of the Bell Memorial church, Ellwood City. Funeral service will be held from the home Thursday at two p.m. and interment will be made in Slippery Rock Cemetery Submitter's notes: 1. The second husband of Mary "Mamie" Duchez was Wilford C[assitt] Cunningham (1857-1930), also buried at Slippery Rock, at Find A Grave Memorial# 61434820. Although his obituary does not say so, he was the son of Joseph Huston Cunningham and [Margaret] Elizabeth Newton, also buried at Slippery Rock Church Cemetery. See Find-a-Grave Memorials # 44154997 and # 44155013. Joseph Huston Cunningham was an associate judge in Lawrence County. He was profiled in the early history of Lawrence County, PA. (Only one Wilford Cunningham was born in Lawrence County in this period. Census recds. reveal he was their child). The biographical portrait of Judge Cunningham probably is the source of Wilford's middle name, almost universally used by researchers of this family. 2. Mary "Mamie" Duchez was the second wife of Wilford Cunningham. His first wife was Mary Jane Campbell, b. 23 Nov 1859 in Wayne, Lawrence, Pennsylvania d. 23 Apr 1939 in New Castle, Pa (at least I think this is where she died. Her obituary simply says she died at the Almira Home.) She was the daughter of Robert Campbell and Catherine Jane Morrow. Her mother, the daughter of Adam Morrow and Catherine Van Eman, was from an early pioneer family. They undoubtedly also are buried at Slippery Rock Church Cemetery. No children were born from the marriage between Wilford and Mary Jane Campbell. Mary Jane CAMPBELL Cunningham also is buried at Slippery Rock Church cemetery, at Find A Grave Memorial# 61404301 Mary J. Cunningham, 1859-1939). 3. A scandal was associated with Wilford's marriage to Mary Mamie Duchez, As a result of the discretion with which the press back then treated extra-marital matters, the content can be discerned only peripherally on the pages in the New Castle News. To briefly summarize, Mamie was the married housekeeper for Wilford and his first wife Mary Jane Campbell Cunningham. While her husband was working in Allegheny County, and living outside the home, she became pregnant. Initially, her pregnancy was attributed to the farmhand working at the Wilford Cunningham homestead. After he was imprisoned and scheduled to stand trial for the alleged offense, Wilford suddenly interceded to resolve the matter. He posted bond for the farmhand and agreed to support the yet unborn child. The next census, in 1920, shows Wilford married to the housekeeper and claiming her three youngest children as his own. 4. In the meantime, Wilford's first wife, Mary Jane Campbell, according to her obituary, went to live in Jamestown, NY. (At the time of her death, she was still a member of one its Presbyterian Church). In 1932, after the death of her husband and his second wife, she returned to Lawrence County. Her obituary obviously does not explain the reason for her sudden departure or return. It simply notes her membership in the Jamestown, NY church, and reports she returned to Lawrence County some 8 years prior to her death. 5. The forename of the mother of Wilford's second wife Mary "Mammie" Duchez was BRIDGET not Bridger. She was the dau of James Kelley and Anna C. Murphy. In one census, she was living with Mamie and her husband, but forenamed Theresa. Mamie's father Louis or Lewis was an immigrant from France. He and his wife died in Palestine, Ohio. The mother, Bridget Murphy Duchez (1862-1932), Find A Grave Memorial# 84288499, is buried at the same cemetery. 6. The forename of Mrs. Wallace Filer, dau of Mary "Mamie" Duchez, was Dorothy Louise FAURIE Filer. She is buried together with her husband in Mercer, Mercer County, PA at find a Find A Grave Memorial# 104215169 (Dorothy L. Filer b. 1909 d. 1941) and Wallace Filer (b. 1892 d. 1961). She was Wallace Filer's second wife. They are buried at Carpenter Cemetery. 7. Daughter Pearl (Elinor), together with the aforementioned daughter Dorothy Louise were the children of Mary Mamie Duchez and her first husband, the French immigrant, Joseph Faurie, b. 1879 in France, arrived in the US in 1900. Daughter Pearl Elinor FAURIE never married. She was a stenographer. She lived for a bit in Chicago, but then joined the Navy and subsequently the Coast Guard.
