Louis was born December 8, 1917 near Redington, NE to Charles and Grace (Fairburn) Newkirk. He graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1937. Louis entered the Army/Air Force on September 16, 1942. He went to airplane mechanics school at Roosevelt Field, Long Island NY. He was then stationed at Perry Air Field at Tallahassee FL till his honorable discharge on December 7, 1944. He married Edith Amateis of Broadwater NE on November 6, 1948 at the Newkirk family ranch. To this union two sons, Joe and Rick, were born. On returning home from his service to his country in the armed forces, Louis began to farm and ranch near Redington NE. He and Edith purchased their farm just outside of Bridgeport in the early 1950's and remained in residence there until early 2010 when ill health required both of them to enter the Heritage of Bridgeport care facility. Louis was an avid cattle feeder throughout his entire life. "More power" was always his motto when it came to farming. He was still feeding fat cattle on his 90th birthday, but was forced to quit shortly thereafter due to health concerns. He was a charter member of the Bridgeport FFA, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, served on the Morrill County ASCS Committee for 17 years, and was a member of the Belmont Ditch Board. He was past Master of Camp Clarke Lodge #285 AF & AM and served as a Demolay leader for several years. While his health permitted, Louis was active in Masons, Scottish Rite and the Shriners. He also served as an Elder and on the Board of Trustees for the Presbyterian Church. During his many years of farming and ranching, Louis received numerous conservation and farm production awards. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Pauline Larson. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Edith, sons Joe (Shelly) and Rick (Margaret), grand children, Douglas Newkirk and Cari Newkirk, Bill (Jill) Newkirk and Lisa (Ryan) Shultz and great grandchildren, Brittney and Brady Newkirk, and Holden and Kaden Shultz. Louis was a fine man of honor and integrity. The joys of his life were his sons, daughter-in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
