Born in Shelburne, Massachusetts, he came to Nebraska in boyhood and entered the Burlington service at Beatrice when he was 18. He held positions with the road at Elk Creek, Tecumseh and Bellwood before coming here. He was retired five years ago. Mr. Ost was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, had served on the city council, and was an outstanding civic leader. The Chamber and the Burlington united in honoring him with a banquet on the occasion of his retirement. "Omardale," in the north part of the city, was purchased by Mr. Ost and John Martz shortly before the World War and made up into lots. This ground was formerly known as "The Spear Tract," and the name "Omardale" was coined from the names Ost and Martz, with the addition of "dale." Looking back at the Cox "History of Seward County, Nebraska," published in 1905, we find the following: "Louis E. Ost, for fifteen years the efficient agent for the B. M. R. R. company, at Seward. Was born at Spelburne (sic) Falls, Massachusetts, September 14, 1860, and was educated at Arms Academy in his native state. When he was twenty years old he heard the buzzing in his hat and he found the western trail, and at first landed at St. Louis but did not like the atmosphere so in 1881 we find him at Beatrice, Nebraska, where in 1882 he took a position with the B. M. people in the same old shed that graces that city. Was in charge of the Seward station for two years, when he excused himself and was in the grain and stock trade for six years. In 1889 he again commenced with the B. M. people and managed the station at Bellwood, and at Milford, until he was transferred to Seward in 1891, where he seems to be right at home. July 4, 1885, he took a prominent part in the grandest celebration of his life at Tecumseh, Neb. and another prominent party in that celebration was a young New York lady, Miss Mary Mook. Under the starry folds of Old Glory they united their fortunes. Mrs. Ost was born March 17, 1866. They have five children, Percy E., Mabel K., Carl D., Lester E. and Irene. Mr. Ost is a prominent member of the AOUW, and of the Knights of Pythias. is president of the Seward Commercial Club, and has been for five years a member of the city council. He took a leading part in securing the electric plant, and is a thoroughtly wide-awake and enterprising citizen." L. E. Ost, as he has always been called, continued to serve the Burlington, and the people of the community, until 1932, when he was retired by the company. The Seward Chamber of Commerce held a celebration in his honor at the time of his retirement, with many officials of the Burlington as special guests. The people of Seward will miss L. E. Ost, as he had always made himself a part of the community, always interested in his many friends, and their joys and troubles. Even after retiring from active service, he made the rounds often to visit. Mrs. Ost died in 1932. Surviving are three sons, Percy, Carl and Lester; daughter, Mrs. Mabel Langner, and an adopted daughter, now the wife of Lester Ost; and seven grandchildren.
