Description	:	"Lewis Ludwig Schad was an albino, having pink eyes, snow white hair and very light sensitive skin. At age 18 (1852) he migrated from Germany to the United States to avoid conscription in the German Army, due to the weakness of his eyes. He lived among the Pennsylvania Dutch in and around Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He worked as a glass blower, and no doubt other jobs he could get. He lived among the Pennsylvania Dutch in and around Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He worked as a glass blower, and no doubt other jobs he could get. He married Mary Catheren Whailer (questions about the spelling of Whailer) )in Ravenna, Ohio on October 3, 1858, at the age of 24 years and 10 months. Sometime during the 1870's he started towards Kansas by covered wagon. He ran out of money in Peoria, Illinois, borrowed a quarter from each of his two oldest boys, bought some brooms, sold them, got more and sold more and was soon in the broom business. He planted broom corn, made brooms and sold them for 3 or 4 years, until he saved enough money to continue his journey to Kansas, probably by train, and homesteaded a farm near Manchester. He spent 10 - 15 years there, raising broom corn, making and selling brooms, along with his other farming operations. When the work got too much for him due to advancing age, he sold the farm and moved to Solomon, Ks. During the last few years of his life, his eyes failed him and he was blind. His daughter Ida Wahl of Creston, Iowa, took care of him in her home until his death on December 18, 1921 at the age of 88 in Creston, Iowa."
