Their older sisters Margaret and Louisa later joined Franz Josef in Belle Plaine. An 1868 contract on file at the Allegany County courthouse indicates that their father Ludwig Neubeiser agreed to the indenture of his sons 'Nicholas and Lewis' to Mary Schneider. The contract required Mary to house, feed, and clothes, Nicholas (15) and Lewis (13) and teach them 'reading, writing, keeping accounts, and the skill of Butchery. In exchange they 'pledged their work and obedience to Mary and her family until their 20th birthdays when they would be released and Mary was to give them each a "suit of clothes."' The 1870 Cumberland census lists Lewis (15) and Nicholas (17) living with Jacob Snyder (40), a butcher, his wife Mary (38), daughter Mary (15), and son Joseph (13). The 1870 census indicates that Jacob, Lewis, and Nicholas were born in Prussia. Three years later in 1873 Lewis Neubiser, then age 18, petitioned the court for redress. He claimed that Mary 'forced him to leave her home' and since that day he had not 'attended a single day of school'. Moreover, she was sickly, bound to her bed, and "it is utterly impossible, in her condition, to teach the art of butchery of which your petitioner knows but very little, and has been kept at other work besides butchering during the time he spent with Said Mistress". Lewis, having been driven from her home without clothing, food, or the means to provide bed or lodging, was forced to seek employment with Henry Lowenstein, another local Cumberland butcher. When his wages became due, Mary Schneider brought suit against Henry Lowenstein for the same, leaving Your Petitioner with no means to obtain even the simplest necessities of life after having been driven from her home. In answering Louis Neubeiser's petition, the court set a hearing and summoned Mary Schneider, who failed to appear, and the court ordered Louis Neubeiser's release from Indenture. Seven years later, the 1880 Cumberland census listed Lewis Neubeiser, 25, living by himself at 24 N. Liberty Street and working as a butcher. Louis worked as a butcher at stall 8 City Market for nearly two decades until about 1895 and later established his own business L. Neubeiser & Son at 62 1/2 S. Centre St. in Cumberland. In 1882 Louis, age 27, married Anne ("Annie") Catherine (nee Knieriem), age 18, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cumberland. Louis and Annie lived on Polk St. and had seven children: William Joseph Neubeiser (1883-1964) John P. Neubeiser (1885-1886) Hazel Rebecca Neubeiser Heinbockel (1887-1935) Louis Daniel Jr. (1889-1954) Marguerite Ann Neubeiser Kretschmer (1889-1965) Marie Ann Neubeiser Harmison (1892-1935) Harry Nicholas Neubeiser (1894-1950) After Annie's death in 1904 Louis married Bertha E. Coleman, the daughter of John M. Coleman and Margaret Coleman. Louis and Bertha had a daughter Louise E. Neubeiser born 1906 and were married for five years before his death on April 28, 1911 after a period of declining health. Louis and his first wife Anna Knieriem are buried near their infant son John on either side of the Neubeiser stone memorial in SS Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Cumberland, Maryland. Louis's children William, Marguerite, and Marie are also buried in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery. His daughter Hazel is buried in Church of the Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Minnesota and his son Louis is buried in Wellersburg Church Cemetery in Wellersburg, PA. His youngest son Harry is buried in Redding Memorial Park in Redding, California. Two years after Louis' death, Bertha in 1913 married widower John W. Stolzer and they lived in Kansas City, Kansas with Bertha's daughter Louise and John Stolzer's son John from his first marriage. Bertha is buried in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Kansas City, Kansas. The Cumberland Times's December 10, 1907 obituary of Henry Maihn listed Louis Neubeiser and Joseph Snyder as nephews, suggesting that Louis's mother Gertrude Mehn may have had a brother who emigrated to the U.S. from Germany. German and U.S. archival records have multiple spellings for the names of Louis Neubeiser and his family. Catholic Church archives from the Diocese of Trier in Germany list Louis's name as Joannes Ludovicus Neubeiser and his birth date as 11 November 1855, but his cemetery memorial inscription's birth year is 1854. Louis's oldest son William gave his father's name as 'Louis N. Neubeiser' in Allegany County court probate records, suggesting Louis' middle initial was "N" although it doesn't seem to appear in census information or the Cumberland phone book. His parents' names are listed in German records as Ludovici Neubeiser and Gertrudis Mehn or Anna Gertrude Mehn in English-language translations of German records.
