Burial will be in Kennebec Cemetery, rural Castana with presentation of the American flag by the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana. Louis "Paul" Reed was born on Aug. 1, 1931, on the family farm east of Ticonic, Iowa, the son of Louis C. and Esther (Cutter) Reed. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Castana High School with the class of 1949. He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana. Paul's life's work was in farming, having lived in the Ticonic and Castana area his entire life. He was proud to continue to farm his family's Century Farm for 54 years, a farm that is now approaching the 150-year mark. On April 25, 1979, Paul married Dorothy Svoboda in Elk Point, S.D. Paul was an actively involved member of Ticonic United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. He was one of the guys in his hunting crew where he insisted on being one of the walkers. He liked the interaction between the guys just as much or more than the hunting itself. Paul took a serious interest in the history, ancestry, and genealogy of his family. He traveled over many states to research his findings and visit the areas from which his family hailed. He was even known to have the unmarked graves of deceased family members properly marked in their respect. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his children, Paula Kluver and her husband, Clayton of Smithland, Iowa, and their children, James, Luke, and Caleb Brenden, Louis Charles and Terri Reed of Castana, and their children, Louis Paul Reed and Renae Nichols, Bruce Reed and his wife, Wendy of Farmington, Minn., and their children, Mitchell and Madison Reed, and Holly Zimmerman and her husband, Corey of Winfield, Kan., and their children, Mathew, Maren, Josh, Nathan, Josiah, Noah, Ella, Emma, and Grace Zimmerman; a stepson, Richard Porter and his wife, Dawn of Sioux City and their children, Jennifer and Ashley Porter; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Barker of Onawa, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Bertha Reed of Warrensburg, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Esther (Cutter) Reed; a brother, Richard "Hoot" Reed; and an infant daughter, Susan Lella Reed.
