Description	:	Lou Athanas February 14, 1913 – January 14, 1997 Mr. Athanas was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1913, son of the late Peter and Nina Athanas. Lou attended Lowell schools, where in high school, his athleticism made him a legend. A gifted, all around athlete; excelling in football, basketball and baseball. Read More	Lou Athanas February 14, 1913 – January 14, 1997 Mr. Athanas was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1913, son of the late Peter and Nina Athanas. Lou attended Lowell schools, where in high school, his athleticism made him a legend. A gifted, all around athlete; excelling in football, basketball and baseball. After high school, he went to the University of Lowell, graduating in 1936, also continuing the three sport excellence. Fittingly, Lou was among the initial group of inductees into the University of Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. After college, Lou competed at the semi-pro level throughout New England in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the United States Baseball Team at the Pan American games in Havana, Cuba. He showed his versatility by winning a City of Lowell tennis doubles championship. Athanas enlisted in the US Marine Corps during the Second World War. It was during this time, he met his wife, Lura; in Washington, DC. It was the start of something big, as the pop tune inferred. A marriage that would last until his death. That’s the kind of guy Lou was. In 1946, Lou and Lura moved to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. There, he started working for the Belknap County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff for ten years. He later became chief clerk of Belknap District Court, a position he held for 21 years. Athanas embarked on an incredible career of 50 years of officiating football, basketball, and baseball at the high school, prep, and collegiate levels. Lou dedicated countless hours to coaching, officiating, organizing, and fund raising for various youth athletic leagues in and around his adopted hometown of Laconia, New Hampshire. He believed in getting kids off the streets and onto the playing fields. In addition to his wife, Lura, Mr. Athanas was is survived by his son, Lou Jr., his wife, Susie, and three grandsons of Gilford, N.H.; his daughter, Felipita Altimari, her husband, Nick, and step grandchildren, of Midlothian, VA.
