He had lived in Le Mars and Oyens since he was 4 years of age. He was 30 years old. Mr. Kass married Lena Kintzle of Oyens on January 29, 1955. The couple were living in Oyens, but had purchased a home in Leeds and planned to move there the 15th of March. He was driving to work at Armour and Co. in Sioux City when he was killed. Mr. Kass was to pick up his brother, James at Merrill on his way. Funeral services are set for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5 at St. Catherine's church in Oyens with Rev. Father Lawrence Schoeppner officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Le Mars under direction of the Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home. Six cousins will be pallbearers. Survivors include his widow, Lena; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kass of Le Mars; two brothers, John of Sioux City and James of Merrill. Deceased was a member of the Eagles club in Le Mars. Parish rosary will be recited at the funeral home in Le Mars on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. +++ Le Mars Globe-Post, IA, Thursday, March 3, 1955, pg. 21, col. 8 Louis Kass Killed When Car Swerves In Front of Truck Hits One, Thrown Into Collision With Another Ice-slick Highway 75 was blamed by Coroner S. H. Luken this morning for the accident which took the life of Louis Robert Kass, 30, at 5:45 this morning, near the Franis Schiefen corner, formerly known as the Mallette corner. Coroner S. H. Luken said Mr. Kass was killed instantly when his light car swerved directly in front of a heavy semi-trailor belonging to the Producers' Co-op association of Sioux City, and was struck broadside. The victim suffered a crushed skull and crushed chest. The accident was reported by one of several truckers, who ran to the Schiefen farm and telephoned to the Le Mars police, who notified Coroner Luken and Sheriff Frank Scholer. As soon as these officers arrived they removed the body from under the wrecked car, and kept traffic moving so that the wreckage could be cleared away. Stoos body shop hauled both the car and the truck to Le Mars. As reconstructed by the coroner the accident happened as follows: Mr. Kass, who is employed by Armour & Co. of Sioux City as a dock foreman, started out as usual. About three miles south of Le Mars, just short of the Schifen corner, he met three trucks belonging to the co-op, on their morning trip. The first of the trucks was driven by Wesley Wilson, of Sioux City. Mr. Wilson told the Plymouth county officials that Mr. Kass seemed to be having trouble keeping his car on the icy pavement. As he passed the northbound truck, the left side of his car came into glancing collision with the left rear wheel of the truck. Another motorist who passed this scene a short time later said the ice seemed to only be in spots on the highway. Roland Rozell, also of Sioux City, saw the car swerve sideways, and then slide directly into the path of the second truck. The truck hit the car violently on its right side. The car was knocked on a diagonal path over to the west side of the road into the ditch. The truck hung precariously on the east side of the road, almost going into the ditch on that side. Coroner Luken said that Mr. Kass was evidently knocked out of his car when it crumpled up and both left-side doors of the light Nash were sprung open. A broad streak of blood on the ice indicated that the body skidded across the road, followed closely by the demolished car, which came to rest on top of the body. The car was about as completely demolished as a car can be. Its entire frame and body were bent in the shape of a boomerang, or a rather flat "U." The top of the car was pinched up so that it stood two or three feet higher than normal. The driver's seat was crushed against the left side, but it would appear from the looks of the wreck that the driver might have had a chance to survive if he had not been thrown out. The damaged truck also bears witness to the violence of the impact. The heavy bumper was bent squarely around the frame. The heavy grill was smashed pretty flat, and the fenders were pushed in. Otherwise the truck suffered little damage, and the driver was not hurt.
