Read More	Lou Laughlin, 59 Widely Known Emmetsburg Man Dies; Funeral Wednesday Emmetsburg residents were saddened to learn of the death early Sunday morning at Rochester, Minn., of Louis Thomas Laughlin, 59, who had been a patient In St. Mary's hospital there the past two weeks. Mr. Laughlin, widely known local man, had been ailing in recent weeks but at first his condition was not believed serious. With Mrs. Laughlin, he left for Rochester where he underwent surgery. Then it became known that he was incurably ill and members of the family were summoned. He was partly conscious through Saturday, recognizing his family, but he later lapsed into a coma, with death coming at about 6:30 Sunday morning. Funeral services will be at St. Thomas church Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, with the Rev. C. E. Farrelly pastor, officiating at the requiem mass. Father Farrelly was among those who went to Rochester to visit Mr. Laughlin during his last illness. The Knights of Columbus, an organization to which Mr. Laughlin belonged, will meet tonight (Tuesday) at 8:30 to recite the Rosary at the Martin Funeral home. The body was returned to Emmetsburg on Sunday evening and will remain at the Martin home until the time of the funeral Wednesday. Serving as pall bearers at the last rites will be six members of the state championship St. Mary's football team of 1931, coached by Mr. Laughlin. The casket bearers will include Jack Jackson, Clyde Brady, Emmet Brenan, Don Donovan, Claude Petit and Francis Neary. The K.C. lodge members will attend the services together, meeting in front of St. Thomas church at 9:15 Wednesday morning. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery. The son of John T. and Margaret Laughlin, well known Emmetsburg family, Lou was born May 22, 1887, in Emmetsburg and grew to young manhood here. As a boy, he spent much of the time with an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tobin, prominent early day couple here, who had become very devoted to the likeable young lad. For a number of winters, he accompanied the Tobins to California. He also attended St. Mary's academy here and later studied at St. Thomas College, St. Paul, Minn. In April 1930, he was married here to Miss Laura Joynt of a well-known Palo Alto family, and they became the parents of two children Jack, 15, and Mary Ann, 14. For several years Mr. Laughlin assisted his brother-in-law, T.R. Martin, county engineer, on county assignments, but in recent years, he was associated with his wife in the operation of Laughlin Laundry firm here. An enthusiastic sports fan and a talented coach, Mr. Laughlin, in 1931 guided the St. Mary's football team to state championship honors, his team defeating Des Moines and other city squads in their contest for the Iowa championship. He and his squad received wide recognition for their outstanding athletic record, their photographs appearing in many state papers with the story of their record-breaking 1931 season. Lou had a way with the students that won their confidence and he was proud of his boys. During his last illness, one of the incidents that made him the happiest was a gift of flowers sent by some of his former football players whom he had coached to state honors. A devoted husband and father, Mr. Laughlin's first interest was in his home. He and his wife were a most congenial pair and their home radiated cheer and hospitality. He never lost his youthful enthusiasm for athletic and other community events which made him a great favorite with young friends of his two children as well as with older friends. There was a close bond of companionship, too, between Mr. Laughlin, his brothers and sisters; six of whom survive. The brothers include Joe and Gene of Emmetsburg, Robert of Mason City and Maurice of Des Moines. Mrs. Renee Hughes of Emmetsburg and Miss Claudia Laughlin, nurse in a government hospital in Texas, are the surviving sisters. Two other sisters, Cassie Laughlin and Mollie Laughlin Martin preceded him in death. Other local relatives include Robert Mulroney, Mrs. J. W. Neary, Miss Molly Mulroney, Mrs. John McNamara, James Mulroney, Mrs. F.X. Cretzmeyer and Mrs. Will Kane, all first cousins of Mr. Laughlin, in addition to a number of nieces and nephews. Lou was a war veteran, having served in the navy during World War I. In Mr. Laughlin's death, the community has lost an active booster and a loyal citizen.
