BORN IN AUSTRIA Mr. Thun was born January 20, 1884 at Tatenitz, Austria. After graduating in landscaping from the College of Agriculture, Vienna, he came to the U.S. in 1903. In 1904 he left Cleveland, Ohio for Tacoma and thence to Portland where he first found employment as a landscaping contractor. Construction of the SP&S railroad in 1905 brought him to Underwood. Demand for rail-road piling kept him busy until 1907 when the boom in apple land started. After buying one orchard tract, Mr. Thun sold it a year later to purchase the site of the present Thun Five Oaks Farm and home. On October 25, 1909, he was married in Tacoma to Emily Janisch, also from Austria. After serving two years as road supervisor, Mr. Thun was elected to two terms as Skamania County Commissioner (1921-1924). In 1930 he returned to politics for two more terms as County Commissioner, from 1931 to 1936. ACTIVE IN IOOF Mr. Thun was Past Grand of Goodwill Odd Fellows Lodge 188, which he joined on Oct. 22, 1920; and he was Past Chief Patriarch of the Encampment of IOOF. He is survived by his wife Emily of Underwood; four daughters, Helen Hartness of Portland, Martha Lehmann of Underwood, Lucille Teller of Seattle and Dorothy Nixon of Federal Way. Also nine grandchildren; a brother, John Thun of Erlangen, West Germany; and a sister, Mollie Mayrfoser of Attnong-Tuchheim, Austria. Mr. Thun was one of the most beloved and respected men in this area. His memory is cherished by members of Mt. Adams Elks lodge and Mt. View Grange of White Salmon, and by hosts of friends throughout the northwest.
