VAN VORHES Died Saturday After Years' Helpless Suffering of Paralysis Louis A. Van Vorhes, age 49, who has been a helpless invalid for a decade or more, died Saturday, death coming as a welcome relief from a world of pain and suffering. The deceased was a locomotive engineer and in November 1890, he began to be seriously affected with "creeping paralysis" which in a short time compelled him to resort to the use of crutches. In September 1891 he went to the National Surgical Institute at Indianapolis for treatment and was placed under the care of Dr. Charles L. Wilson. A few months after his arrival at the Institute, it was burning to the ground. Helpless as he was, he got to a window and dropped to a roof some fourteen feet below, where he was rescued by the firemen. Nineteen lives were lost in the fire. From the time of that frightful experience his condition gradually grew worse, losing nearly all of his physical powers. For the last twelve years he has received the constant and tender care of his mother and sister, who did all in their power to minister to his wants and make him as comfortable as possible. The funeral was held at the family residence on University Terrace, Monday afternoon. The father of the deceased, Hon. Nelson H. Van Vorhes was at one time a joint owner of the Athens Messenger and Hocking Valley Gazette, was a colonel in the civil war and served six terms in the Ohio legislature, being speaker of the House two terms. He served two terms in the national congress, being the member from this district. He died in Athens in 1882. The mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Van Vorhes, yet living, is the daughter of Eben Foster, who was born in Sudbury, Vermont in 1798 and died in Athens in 1831.
