Louis Wilczenski, 5-year-old son of Mrs. Josie Wilczenski, was instantly killed at 12:05 p.m. last Friday when he was struck by Union Pacific mail train No. 5, about 125 feet east of the signal tower in the east end of the Columbus yards. The tot's body was tossed against a passing freight train, back against the coal car on No. 5, and dropped beside the track. The head and right arm were severed from the body which was found fully sixty-eight feet from the point where the child was standing when struck. At the inquest which was held by Coroner Henry Gass at the Gass undertaking parlors Saturday afternoon three witnesses told the story of the tragedy. They were Engineer W. H. Bey, of No. 5, William Stein, the towerman, and Joe Schmitz, who happened to be in the tower at the time of the accident. Their stories were to the effect that the child ran up from the weeds along the north side of the right-of-way onto the north main line track to watch a freight train which was passing on the south track. He stood between the rails, close to the south one, failing to notice No. 5 which was sweeping down upon him, scarcely half a block away. Engineer Bey sounded his warning whistle and clapped on the emergency brakes, but the tot failed to hear the signal and t was too late to stop. The momentum of the train which had been running at a speed of thirty or thirty-five miles an hour was too great. The child evidently saw his danger at the last moment and, confused, jumped toward the freight train for the pilot of No. 5's engine did not strike him. When Engineer Bey brought his train to a stop he found blood on the step on the south side of the engine, just behind the cylinder, and another spot on the coal hopper, indicating that little Louis had been hit by the step, thrown against the freight train and back against No. 5's coal car. After hearing the testimony, the coroner's jury brought in a verdict that the child "had come to his death on the 14th of July by being struck by Union Pacific train No. 5 at a point one block within the city limits, the train running at a speed of 30 to 35 miles an hour." Members of the jury were Ed Rossiter, Eilert Mohlman, Frank J. Gerharz, Chas. J. Micek, Will Ragatz, Joseph A. Gutzmer. Funeral services were held at St. Anthony's Catholic church at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon and burial was made in the parish cemetery.
