He married Blanche Sevick October 19, 1904. The first and last children died at birth. Blanche Sevick's sister, Barbara married Louis's brother Joseph thus all of the children of these families were "double cousins". L.W.'s family was a family of firsts in many ways for the Halupnik clan. He was the first born of Louis and Sofie (Drinovsky) Chalupnik's seven children. He was the first to move from the "Bohemian Hills" of south Tama county. L.W. moved one mile north of Traer and established the family home in a small house west of the current buildings. The present house was built in 1909 and it is still occupied by his son Ernest and his family. He and his wife parented the first set of twins in the family. In fact Blanche gave birth to two sets of twins with a single birth in between in just three calendar years. George was the first Halupnik to marry outside the Czech nationality when he married Luella Hulme, an English woman from Dinsdale. His brothers and sisters followed, marrying those of German, Irish, and other nationalities. The grandchildren were the first to not learn to speak Czech. The decree in 1917 by the governor of Iowa that not more than two people should carry on a conversation in a foreign language in public discouraged the teaching of Czech. Martha was the first Halupnik to win a beauty contest when she was crowned Miss Traer in 1936, although her nephew Dale did win a baby contest at Geneseo a year earlier. Blanche was the first to permanently leave the farming community when she married Clarence Gloe and assisted her new husband in operating his grocery store in Cedar Rapids. Ernest was the first Halupnik to serve in the military. He was drafted in 1942 and served in the Alaskan and the European theatres until 1945. George's son Dale was the first of Louis Chalupnik's family to graduate from a four year college when he received his degree from Iowa State College (University) in 1959. In 1937 L.W. won the Tama County tall corn contest with an entry fourteen feet seven and one-half inches tall. His entry won eighteenth place and a cash prize of five dollars in the state contest at Des Moines. L.W. died in 1939 after only three of his many grandchildren were born. Blanche lived until she was 93 years old. Their farm house was one of the first to have electricity. This was provided by a Delco DC battery storage system. As the lights would begin to dim, someone would have to scurry to the basement and start the engine powered generator. One of my fondest memories as a child was the week's vacation that my sister Arlene and I would spend at Grandma's house. Her nightly serving of a small portion of grape wine to us was "justified" as "good for the blood". As years went by we realized the wine more than likely guaranteed her a full night's uninterrupted rest. A visiting child would never leave her house without a glass of ginger ale and a dime. I'm convinced to this day that her kolaches were better because of her whistling while she cooked. Possibly the only thing she enjoyed more than cooking was growing the food in her garden. In her later years she developed a skin condition which resulted in her doctor advising her to stay out of the sun. In order to continue her gardening she would work in her garden before the sun rose. We always knew that Grandma was talking to her brother Joe Sevick on the telephone when she spoke in Czech. In her failing years her daughters all spent many days sharing the responsibility of caring for her at her home. This allowed her to live in her home until her death. Both L.W. and Blanche are buried at St. Vaclav Cemetery near Clutier. by Dale Halupnik Heart Disease Claims L. W. Halupnik, Traer Fanner, at Age of 59 Prominent Lifelong Resident of North Tama County Succumbs After Long Illness Widow, Three Sons, Five Daughters Survive— Three Brothers Also Living L. W. Halupnik, prominent farmer and lifelong resident of the Traer and Clutier communities, died about 8:45 p. m. Friday at his home two miles north of Traer following a long illness of heart disease and complications. Mr. Halupnik had been in failing health for the last four or five years and had been a patient in a Waterloo hospital for various periods. He was continuously bedfast for three months before his death. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek, of Clutier, were held Monday morning at the home near Traer and at St. Vaclav church, west of Clutier. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery. Six nephews of the decedent served as pallbearers. Lewis William Halupnik was born in Carroll township, Tama county, September 7, 1879 and was educated in the rural schools of that township. He was married to Blanche Sevcik on October 19, 1904, at St. Vaclav church. Surviving, besides the widow, are three sons and five daughters—George Halupnik, east of Traer; Edward and Ernest, at home; Blanche, wife of Clarence Gloe, of Cedar Rapids; Martha, wife of Rene Whipple, of Traer; and Eleanor, Marlon and Marcella, all at home. The decedent also leaves three brothers—Joseph C. Halupnik, between Traer and Toledo; Amiel Halupnik, between Traer and Clutier; and Albert, of the Voorhies vicinity.
