LOUISE POCHICK Authorities investigate 'unnatural death' in Wolfe By SAMANTHA PERRY of the Daily Telegraph staff October 01, 2002 WOLFE - Police are continuing their investigation into the shooting death of a Mercer County woman. Louise Pochick, 62, of Wolfe, died Sunday at her residence from a gunshot wound to the head, Sgt. John Alexander, with the Princeton detachment of the West Virginia State Police, said Monday. "It wasn't a self-inflicted wound," Alexander said. Police were dispatched to Pochick's residence Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m., Alexander said. He said Pochick lived at the residence with her brother, Mike. Pochick's body was sent for an autopsy Monday, Alexander said, adding that evidence was also sent to the State Police lab. "It's an unnatural death, so we're treating it as such," he said. "We're following all leads." Wolfe is a small community located near the West Virginia-Virginia state line between Bramwell and Pocahontas, Va.
MORE ON THE DEATH OF LOUISE POCHICK Weapon recovered in fatal Wolfe shooting investigation By: CHARLES OWENS of the Daily Telegraph staff October 02, 2002 WOLFE - The probe into the mysterious shooting death of a Mercer County woman continued Tuesday. Louise Pochick, 62, of Wolfe, died Sunday at her residence on Pochick Lane in Wolfe from a gunshot wound to the head, according to Sr. Trooper R.A. Maddy of the West Virginia State Police Princeton Detachment. Maddy said the woman was found by her brother, Mike, in an upstairs area of the house. A preliminary autopsy report indicates the woman died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and investigators believe only one shot was fired. A single slug was recovered from the scene. Maddy said the gunshot wound wasn't self-inflicted. However, he said authorities are not ready to call the incident a homicide. "It is an investigation into a shooting," Maddy said. "It is not believed to be self-inflicted. But we are not calling it a homicide. It is a shooting." Sgt. M.D. Clemons added the incident is being investigated as a "suspicious shooting." "We have recovered a weapon, and it has been sent to the lab for analysis," Clemons said. "It is still an active investigation." Maddy said the woman and her brother were the only two people living at the residence, located just off of Route 102, at the time of the shooting. The man found the woman dead at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in an upstairs area of the structure. Maddy said the man immediately called 911, and investigators remained at the scene of the shooting for most of the night and into early Monday. Maddy said no other injuries were reported in the shooting. "The brother is fine," Maddy said. "Those were the only two who were living there." Maddy said officials are still interviewing neighbors and other residents living in the community. "It is still ongoing," Maddy said. "Evidence has been sent to the crime lab for analysis." Maddy declined to comment further regarding any specifics of the investigation. Wolfe is a small community located near the West Virginia-Virginia state line between Nemours and Pocahontas, Va.
MORE ON THE DEATH OF LOUISE POCHICK Investigators: Mercer woman killed by stray shot By: CHARLES OWENS of the Daily Telegraph staff October 03, 2002 PRINCETON - It will be up to a grand jury to decide if charges will be filed in connection with the fatal shooting of a Mercer County woman apparently struck by a stray bullet, state police said Wednesday. Louise Pochick, 62, of Wolfe, died Sunday at her residence on Pochick Lane from a gunshot wound to the head. A stray bullet allegedly fired by a nearby resident traveled about a half-mile distance and struck the woman in an upstairs bedroom area of the house, according to Sgt. M.R. Miller of the West Virginia State Police Princeton Detachment. Miller said the man who fired the weapon has been identified, but no charges have been filed at this time. "I don't even think they were close enough to be called neighbors," Miller said. "We haven't made any arrests. We will take all of the facts to the prosecuting attorney, and let him make a decision." Miller said the man, whose identity isn't being released, was firing a handgun outside "for no specific reason - he was just firing a weapon." The man allegedly didn't know he struck and killed the woman until a short time later. "When you fire a gun, you need to know where it (the bullet) will go," Miller said. "This wasn't a weapon used for hunting. It was a handgun." Miller said the incident is being called an "accidental shooting" at this time. Although the case has been presented to Prosecuting Attorney Bill Sadler, Miller said there isn't enough time for the case to be presented to Monday's session of the Mercer County grand jury. A weapon has been recovered, and forwarded to the State Police's crime lab in South Charleston. Miller said the stray bullet traveled "around a half mile," and was fired "some distance away." The woman and her brother were the only two people living at the residence, which is located just off of Route 102. The woman was found dead by her brother at 5:15 p.m. Sunday in an upstairs bedroom area of the house.
