The following marriage announcement appeared in The Burlingame Enterprise, Burlingame, Kansas, December 1, 1898, Thursday, page 5: “Hoover-Shumate- From Sunday’s Topeka Capital we clip the following account of the marriage of Mr. David Melville Hoover to Miss Louise Shumate, Wednesday evening, November 23rd. At the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Shumate, their daughter Miss Louise Shumate, and Mrs. David M. Hoover, of St. Marys, were joined in the bond of matrimony. The ceremony was performed in the bow window, lined with palms, ferns and white chrysanthemums, and on the floor were white fur rugs. Mrs. J. W. Going played the wedding march and the bride and groom entered the room unattended. Dr. Embree met them and performed the ring ceremony. The bride wore a pretty trailing gown of white silk trimmed with chiffon and passementerie. She carried twenty-one white roses. Mr. and Mrs. Pratt, of Burlingame, received with Mr. and Mrs. Shumate, the assisting them in entertaining were Mrs. Coates, Mrs. J. C. McGlintock, Miss Crillie Cuttell and Miss Gall Clark. Mrs. and Mrs. Hoover will be at home after December 15, at 1306 Tyler street. David M. Hoover is a former Burlingame boy. He was born and raised on the Hoover homestead just north of this city and The Enterprise joins with his many friends in extending congratulations and best wishers. With the bride we are not personally acquainted, but she is spoken of as a handsome, refined and estimable young lady. Mr. and Mrs. Hoover spent Thanksgiving at the home of his sister, Mrs. B. E. Pratt in this city.” She was Cremated
