Loveta Rowley Barnett Short was born on July 3, 1927 on a farm northwest of Wauneta Nebraska. She was the youngest of four children born to Henry and Lottie Waidley Rowley. Loveta grew up on the farm where she attended country school. Music was a big part of Loveta's life. She learned to play the guitar as a young girl. She was playing in a band when she met Charley Barnett and they were married on August 10, 1942 in St. Francis Kansas. Nine children were born to this union. Her family was the focus of her life. She encouraged all her children to get a good education, always checking to make sure homework was finished each night. She believed in family togetherness. Saturday nights were spent putting together jigsaw puzzles, popping popcorn, and playing card games. Loveta worked at the Grant Cafe when the children were young. She also worked for a time at Goodall's and TRW in Ogallala. Chickens were a big part of her life. Loveta worked in the poultry processing plant owned by Charley Tatum, then with Willie Burnham. When the plant closed, she went to work at the processing plant owned by Cleo Schneller. In 1973, the family moved to the acreage east of Grant where she enjoyed raising chickens and turkeys. They built a poultry processing plant on the farm where she spent many hours cleaning chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese and encouraging her employees with the statement, "This won't take long!" Charley died in 1975. On September 15th, 1979, Loveta was married to Donald Short in Elsie. They lived for a time on the Short family farm south of Elsie and then moved to the Barnett farm east of Grant. In 1997, they moved into Madrid. They enjoyed raising a large garden, doing yard work and having the grandchildren visit. Don died in January of 2009 and Loveta continued to maintain her home in Madrid until September when she moved to Torrington Wyoming to live with her daughter, Sharon. Loveta had developed a malignancy and died on February 13, 2010 at the Zavorka home in Torrington surrounded by her family. In addition to her parents, Loveta was preceded in death by her two husbands; 3 sons - Frank (who died in infancy), Carl, and Richard; 2 brothers - Milo and Wayne Rowley, 1 sister - Carolyn Kurth and her half sister - Wilma Rowley; daughter-in-law, Sharon Barnett.
