The days and years... Read More	The Conrad Journal, Conrad, Iowa, June 23, 1896 Lovina Pomeroy, daughter of William and Catherine Pomeroy, was born in Stark County, Ohio, August 11, 1833. September 5th, 1850 she became the wife of Mr. John H. Canon, (son of Henderson Canon and Catharine Vandersall) with whom she was permitted to share life's joys and sorrows for almost 46 years. This happy union was brought to a close fifteen minutes after six, last Saturday evening, June 20th, 1896, when after six or seven years of failing health she received the final summons from suffering and earth. The days and years of her pilgrimage were 62 years, 10 months, and 21 days. Mrs. Canon became the mother of nine children, seven of whom today live and mourn with their dear father the loss of one of earth's best mothers and wives. In the year of 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Canon moved from Ohio to Washington County, Iowa. After twelve years of residence in that place, they came to Grundy County, and have lived in and about Conrad Grove ever since, being almost thirty years. More than twenty-five years since she became a Christian, and at the time of her death she was one of the most honored members of the church of her choice. Such has been the character of her life that the words of St. Paul, as recorded in Timothy, fourth chapter and seventh verse, " I have fought a good fight," seem most fitting. The theme that her life suggests to me is the " Living of a good life. " Someone has said that "life is a great drama in which each individual of mankind plays a part." In this drama each has the choosing of the part that he plays. It pleased our sister to play a noble part, and that she might succeed to do her best, she chose the Man of Galilee to be her model. Of late the press and the lecturer have had much to say about the new woman, and, as they have portrayed her character, there are some things about her that are lovely. But however excellent may be the woman of the future, it is very doubtful if she will be able to eclipse our mothers and wives. She may wield a greater intellectual influence but when it comes to good sense and true heart loyalty, our mothers and wives are the examples of the age, and, if I mistake not, no new woman will ever out shine them. Some talk to us about the larger sphere of woman and we all rejoice to hear of her new acquisitions, we will not forget that her highest excellencies shine out as a wife, mother, friend and Christian. Sister Canon was a good wife. So far as it was possible to her, she was faithful to him for whom she had chosen for life's companion. She was not goaded to this by a sense of duty, but it arose from a deep and broad sense of love. During the last hours, her sweetest smiles fell on him, and her hottest tears fell for him, and her strongest prayers arose for him whom she must leave behind. As we came often to her sick room, we always witnessed some new manifestation of love to the only sister and the last member of her father's family that betokened years of crystallization. No duty was a greater pleasure to her than to open her heart's store of love to her children and grand children. Here was a bank upon which they might draw at will, and nothing will be sweeter to them than recollections of mother and grandma. The well performance of family duties by no means exhausted her interests in others, but seemed to enable her to accumulate strength to feel for all. Many have been the words that these ears have heard in the last few weeks in regard to the beautiful life of the deceased one. As a Christian she made no great outward show. Her life was a shining illustration of humility and trust. Her peace was as a river. As the sun reaches its zenith it is the brightest, but at sunset it is most glorious; so with our friend. While there were weeks and even years of suffering that at last clouded reason, there would come an occasional rift in this cloud out of which would pour great streaks of the golden sunshine of life's beautiful sunset. Brief funeral services were held at the residence on Monday at 2 p.m. conducted by Revs. Trimble and Barton, after which her remains were conducted to the Conrad Cemetery by a large concourse of friends.
