Description	:	Lowell Cady, 95, of Sioux Falls, went to his eternal home from natural causes on May 12, 2020 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls. Much like his parents, Lowell believed in hard work. After graduating from Stickney High School in 1942, he elected to go to work (rather than enlist in the military). He gave 30 years of his life to South Sioux Oil Co. managing a neighborhood service station at the corner of 41st and Minnesota Avenue. He then spent 5 years with Palmer Construction Company, working long hours with his hands and mind. Later, he & Betty moved out to his beloved Edelweiss Mountain Development in the Black Hills of South Dakota where he had purchased a comfortable home from which he could watch the local wildlife from his veranda. While living there he worked hard managing the development for its owners. When mountain road driving became too much, they returned to South Dakota and settled into a modest home on Lake Brandt in Chester. Not being one to stay idle, Lowell subsequently took a full-time position with HyVee in Sioux Falls as a floral delivery driver. He was 68 years old. For the next 21 years, he would drive 35 miles every morning from his lake home - no matter the weather. Once at work, he would load dozens of floral arrangements into the HyVee delivery van and head out with his city map in hand. After 50 to 250 road miles later, Lowell would return to HyVee and invariably check in with his buddy in the meat department. (Lowell thought the rules regarding shelf-life were a bit tight.) He’d gladly purchase at a discount meat packages that were past-due and make the return 35-mile trip back to Lake Brandt. Remarkable! His life at home was equally as busy. He always had a vegetable garden and raised plenty of tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. He fashioned a canning station in the corner of his garage where he would “put up” literally hundreds of quarts of vegetables every year. He enjoyed going out onto the lake in his pontoon to fish for bullheads…which, was probably the only form of recreation he ever really tolerated. In his early years, however, he would occasionally break away for a whitetail or antelope hunt. Lowell retired for good in 2013, at the age of 89. On May 25, 2014 we celebrated Lowell’s 90th birthday with a family party at the lake. But as Betty’s health continued to deteriorate it became clear that living independently on the lake was no longer the best option. Reluctantly, Lowell agreed to move closer to family. We placed a down-payment on a villa home in eastern Sioux Falls and began the arduous task of down-sizing. Sadly, on one very cold morning in January 2016, Lowell decided to climb into the rafters of his garage to retrieve a pail. He slipped off the top rung of an 8-foot ladder and fell to the concrete, breaking a hip. Long story short, he was taken by ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, never to return to his lake home. Lowell spent several weeks in rehab before being moved to the Inn on Westport, where he spent the last 3 years of his life. Lowell fought hard to live to be 100 years old, primarily because he didn’t know what lay on the other side. On the day before he died, we talked about many things. He reminisced fondly about Tiger Meat, Oyster Stew and Black Berry Brandy. He asked me, “What do you suppose will happen to my spirit when I pass on? Will I be there when they put me into the crematorium? Will it hurt?” I assured him, “Lowell, your spirit will leave your body the moment your heart stops beating. You will float up to heaven where you’ll be met at the Pearly Gates by your parents and all your brothers. Won’t that be wonderful?” Lowell thought about that for a while and smiled, saying “Yes, it sure will”. Memorial services for Lowell will be held 1:00 pm Friday, August 7th at Miller Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to service time. Lowell's memorial service will be live streamed over the Miller Funeral Home, You Tube Channel.
