Lowell was born November 13, 1931 in Fremont, NE to Ed and Alice (Ranslem) Arps. He grew up in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School in 1948. Arps, 81 years, of Grand Island, NE, formerly of Fremont, NE died Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island. Lowell was born November 13, 1931 in Fremont, NE to Ed and Alice (Ranslem) Arps. He grew up in Fremont and graduated from Fremont High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps January 31, 1952 - January 30, 1954 during the Korean War. He worked for Nebraska Natural Gas Company (later taken over by the City of Fremont) from 1948-1976 as the Meter Shop Superintendant and from 1976-1988 as Construction and Service Superintendant and Gas Meter Supervisor until retiring in 1988. He married Jeanette E. Ruwe September 25, 1949 at Salem Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. She died May 20, 1985. Lowell was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church ELCA in Fremont. He was a 50 year member of both the Fremont Volunteer Fire Fighters Association and the Nebraska Volunteer Fire Fighters Association. He served many offices of both, including president. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #200 and the American Legion Post #20 for over 21 years. Survivors include: son – Brian and wife Kim Arps of Fremont, NE; daughters – Annette and husband Bob Sorensen of Grand Island, NE & Shari and husband Paul Brei of Juniata, NE; sister – Evelyn Hedgecock of Sunbury, OH; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette and his parents. Funeral Service will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday June 11, 2013 at Salem Lutheran Church ELCA in Fremont. The Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Monday with the family receiving friends 5-8 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue on Tuesday 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Fremont with Military Honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20. Memorials may be directed to the Nebraska Fallen Firefighters Museum in Grand Island, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fremont, or to the donor's choice.
