Lowell Dean Rothbart was born on a farm north of Wheatland January 21, 1918 to Frank and Hattie (Jeppe) Rothbart. He attended rural school north of Wheatland, and graduated from Wheatland High School in 1935. He farmed prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps on September 5, 1941. His squadron... Read More	Lowell D. Rothbart, 86, Grand Mound, Iowa, died Friday morning, November 26, 2004 at Westwing Place, DeWitt. Lowell Dean Rothbart was born on a farm north of Wheatland January 21, 1918 to Frank and Hattie (Jeppe) Rothbart. He attended rural school north of Wheatland, and graduated from Wheatland High School in 1935. He farmed prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps on September 5, 1941. Lowell married the former Darlene Minnaert, April 25, 1943 at St. James Catholic Church, Toronto, Iowa. He continued his service to his country serving in the 8th Air Corps, 77th Fighter Squadron. His squadron was involved in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Air Campaigns. During this time, he was awarded an American Defense Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 1 Silver Battle Star and 1 Bronze Battle Star, 4 Overseas Service Bars, 1 Service Stripe and a Good Conduct Medal, prior to his honorable discharge on October 9, 1945. He was Past Postmaster at Wheatland, owned and operated Grand Mound Hardware, drove school bus and retired from Caterpillar in May of 1983. He was a member of Saints Philip & James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, where he served on the Finance Committee as well as various other committees. Lowell was a 59 year member of the Grand Mound American Legion Post #622 where he served as Post Adjutant for over 50 years. He was a member of the Grand Mound Fire Department and served on the Board of the Grand Mound Community Club and was Bingo Director for many years. He was always willing to volunteer his time for the Grand Mound Community. Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Darlene; his daughters, Gail Votroubek, Davenport, and Jean (John) Lewis, Tucson, AZ; three sons, Dean (Pam) Rothbart, Peoria, IL, Neil (Joy) Rothbart, Grand Mound, and Kurt (Sharon) Rothbart, Lisbon, IA; 11 grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Jeffrey and Amy Votroubek, Christine (Randy) Chaney, Matthew, Cory, Jaime, Adam and Megan Rothbart, Kristen (Benton) Jones; three step-grandchildren, Jon, Chad and Jodi Marlowe; four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Preceding Lowell in death were his parents, a grandson, Lee, a step-grandson, Corey, a brother, Carol and a sister, Maxine Deverwaere. The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, in the afternoon from 2 until 4 p.m. and in the evening from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2004. Vigil Service 8 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at Saints Philip and James Catholic Church, Grand Mound. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness presiding. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family suggests memorial to Saints Philip and James Church or the Grand Mound Community Center.
