Piper, 73, of Longmont, CO died November 19, 2012 at the Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville, CO. Lowell was born on June 22, 1939 in Yuma, Colorado to Charles and Zella (Monk) Piper. He grew up in Wray where he attended school. He was an outstanding three-sport athlete in high school and received all-state honors. Lowell married Claudia Jo (Jodee) Barr in Denver, Colorado on June 22, 1957. Two sons (Doug and David) were born in Greeley, CO. The family made their home in various Colorado locations, including Wray, Greeley, Ft. Morgan, Arvada, Lafayette and Longmont. The family also lived briefly in Nashville, TN. Lowell followed the teacher footsteps of his parents, attending Colorado State College and received his bachelor's and master's degrees. Upon graduation, he taught briefly in Rapid City, SD. This was followed by a lengthy and successful career as an insurance agent and manager for New York Life, Horace Mann, and State Farm. He earned the coveted CLU designation in 1973 and also attended the LSU Institute of Insurance Marketing. He received numerous awards and national recognition for his consistent accomplishments in the insurance business. Lowell enjoyed spectator sports, reading, playing cards, traveling, and music, including several concerts. His persistent effort to improve his golf game is widely known by family members and friends. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Jodee; his two sons: Douglas (Stacy) of Colorado Springs, CO and David (Pam) Piper of Westminster, CO; three grandchildren: Audri, Ryan, and Sami; one great grandson, Parker; his brother: Stan (Chris) Piper of Centennial, CO; three sisters: June (Don) Torborg of Lakewood, CO, Cheryl (Rick) Speicher of Houston, TX, and Phyllis (Ray) Sperber of Colorado Springs, CO; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members. Memorial services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, 350 11th Avenue in Longmont. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church in Longmont.
