He was born March 29, 1940, to Virgil and Esther (Wright) Fanning south of Palisade. Lowell attended several country schools south of Palisade until he reached the eighth grade, then attended Trenton High School until his graduation in 1958. After graduating, he worked in Denver, Colo., a short time before moving back to Trenton and meeting Sharon, his wife to be, who was a 1960 Culbertson High School graduate. Lowell and Sharon Rose Templeman were married on May 26, 1960 at Ottumwa, Iowa. Later they moved to Ogallala where their first daughter, Annette Rose, was born. They moved back in the area where Lowell worked at farming and ranching. Their second daughter, Christine Marie , was then born. Lowell started working for Maddux Cattle Company, north of Wauneta in September, 1963 and their third daughter, Lisa Lee, was born. Lowell was employed by Maddux's until 1976 when the family moved into Wauneta and he began work for the Wauneta Co-Op Oil Company. He worked at a few other m jobs prior to opening his own business, the Fanning Lawn Service, with his wife, Sharon. Lowell was diagnosed with cancer in May of 1992. After three months of chemotherapy and radiation, he returned home where he was able to help cut milo, pick corn and do other things he enjoyed. He was a hard worker and loved the out-of-doors. Among other things he enjoyed were taking their dog, Chiquita, for rides, Bugs Bunny cartoons and just being outside. Lowell became ill again the end of December and his condition gradually worsened until his death. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Annette Rose, in 1980. Survivors include his wife, Sharon of Wauneta; daughters-Christine Buck and husband, Ron of McCook, and Lisa Kurth and husband, Dennis, and sons Erik and Jed of Rifle, Colorado; parents, Virgil and Esther Fanning of Enders; two sisters, Lorine Beck and husband,Keith of Paxton; and Dianna Tillotson of Aurora, Colo., and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Services were held Friday, March 5 at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta with Pastor Carroll Plisek officiating. Music was provided by soloist, Sharon Walgren, accompanied by Lucille McBride. Casket bearers were Kelly Fanning, Mike Maddux, Mark Hamilton, Pat Madden, Jack Maddux and Kent Steckman. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.
