Lowell Calkins was born on April 4, 1939 to Glenn and Nell (Olson) Calkins in Sioux Falls, SD. He completed his education at Bancroft, Whittier, Washington High, and Southern State Teacher’s College in Springfield, SD. As a young Romeo, he saw a 22 year old gal climbing a tree outside his apartment complex and decided he would marry her, which he did, on May 16, 1964. They were blessed with two children, Bill, of Sioux Falls, and Molly, of Brandon, SD. Lowell worked 30 years at John Morrell Co. and 12 years as custodian of First Presbyterian Church. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and woodcarving. He was an avid historian and had a keen memory of events and dates, also proud of his Sioux Falls heritage, as his great-grandfather, Henry W. Smith was very instrumental in the founding of Sioux Falls. His passion was Jesus Christ, he had a strong faith. Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, Sally; two children, Bill and Molly Calkins; grandson, Tony Calkins, a great-granddaughter Tanner Calkins; a brother, Carroll Calkins, and his wife Janice; sister, Sharon Heinrich, and her husband Ken; and a host of many other relatives and friends. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn (Nell) Calkins; and a baby sister, Dianne. - George Boom Funeral Home
