Messman and Nancy Wheeler Messman on April 19, 1916, on a farm two mils east of Strang, and passed away on august 1, 1984, at Geneva at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 13 days. He was the only child in the family. When he was eight years old, he and his parents moved to Strang. Lowell received his education in a country school and Strang Public School. He resided in Strang until 1978, except from 1942 to 1946, when he served in World War II. In 1978, he moved to Geneva and resided there until his death. Lowell was married to Vera Mae DuBois of rural Strang on august 11, 1939, and to them two sons were born. He is survived by his wife, Vera Mae of Geneva; a son, Larry, his wife Lavonne, and their children, Terri, Mickey and Randy of Strang; a son, Jerry of Fayetteville, Ar.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Wheat of Cupertino, Cal., Louise DuBois of Bruning, and Eileen DuBois of Geneva; an uncle and aunt, Leon and Wylma Messman of Aurora; aunts, Grace Eich of Geneva and Leta Messman of Hebron; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer C. and Nancy E. Messman, and brothers-in-law, Les Wheat, Leland DuBois and Kenneth DuBois. In his late teens, Lowell began a produce business in which he purchased primarily cream, eggs, and chickens from area farmers in Fillmore and surrounding counties. He successfully pursued this business for over 30 years until the mid-1960’s when he sold the business and began farming in the rural Strang area. While operating his produce business, he established many meaningful relationships with business associates and patrons. He farmed full-time until 1978 when he and Vera moved to Geneva. He still maintained active involvement in the farming operation and Strang community until his illness in January of 1983. Lowell and his family belong to the First Congregational Church of Geneva and have dutifully served the church and community. One of his earlier hobbies was raising burros and participating in parades of Diamond Jubilees and Achievement Day celebrations in Fillmore and surrounding counties. Lowell was also interested in sports and enthusiastically attended sporting events in Geneva and the surrounding area. He and his father were important figures in re-establishing baseball in Strang and helped coach numerous Strang teams. Lowell later served as an assistant coach for the Geneva American Legion Team. One of his most memorable moments was in 1968, when the Legion Baseball Team was one of the four teams in the state which qualified to play in the Class B State Tournament in Broken Bow. During his later years, Lowell’s interests were centered primarily around his family, especially his grandchildren. Lowell served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He saw active combat for over two years throughout Europe. He was also a member of Geneva American Legion Post No. 68. Lowell led a very active life until his illness in January of 1983. He will be greatly missed by his family, numerous friends, and business associates. Pallbearers were Warren, Ron, Kenneth, Duane and Darrell Messman, Keith Eich and John Stables.
