"Bud" Miles, the son of Fred and Nellie Burt Miles, was born January 12, 1917 on a farm southeast of Holyoke in Phillips County. He attended grade school at the Amitie School and also high school in Holyoke. He started farming with his father. In January of 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Europe, North Africa, and Sicily. He was injured during his tour of duty in Italy and received his discharge in 1946. He returned to Holyoke and began farming again. In 1947, he was united in marriage to Lucille Linnenbrink in Denver. They made their home on the farm in the Amitie Community until retiring to Holyoke in 1983 where they have continued to live. Bud was an active member of the Holyoke VFW where he was a past commander. He had also served as Commander of District 4 as well as holding several state offices. He had also taken an active interest in the Pleasant Valley Ball Park. Survivors include his wife Lucille Miles of Holyoke; two sons Ron Miles and wife Roxanne and Richard Miles both of Holyoke; daughter Mrs. Robert [Rochelle] Major of Mankato, MN; sister Mae Forbes of Denver; sister-in-law Sophia Miles of Haxtun; five grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Melvern and sister Reta. Bud passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Denver Wednesday, September 9, 1987 at the age of 70. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 12, 1987 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Holyoke with Rev. James Mort and Rev. Ken Boswell officiating, with burial following in Holyoke Memorial Park. Military honors were conducted by the Holyoke VFW Post.
