Description	:	In 1887 George A. Russell took the post of steward at Wilbraham (Methodist) Academy in Wilbraham a suburb of Springfield, MA. The History of Wilbraham, pub. 1893, mentions Russell on pages 460-461: "...This year, George A. Russell, a native of Maine, who had filled several civil offices, and a man of culture and gentlemanly bearing, was chosen to fill the office of steward, made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Daggett, whose place, it was supposed, could never be filled by a man equally competent and efficient. Russell, a native of Maine, who had filled several civil offices, and a man of culture and gentlemanly bearing, was chosen to fill the office of steward, made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Daggett, whose place, it was supposed, could never be filled by a man equally competent and efficient. This was a mistake. Though unlike, Mr. Russell has proved himself, if possible, more than equal to his predecessor. To general intelligence and good taste as well as sound sense, he joins the utmost diligence and care for all the interests committed to him. Besides the careful and economical management of the farm, the buildings are kept in repair and the grounds in order. In the management of the house and the supply of the table, as well as in caring for every need of the students, he displayed unusual judgment and tact, a service in which he was materially aided by his wife, a woman of much intelligence, great kindness and skill in the direction of the affairs of a large and complicated household. During this entire administration the steward's offfice has been ably filled, and contributed much to the success of the school... ' In 1905-1906 George bought 17 acres and a large brick house on Old Kents Hill Road, known from 1955-2014 as the Jack Smart house. He gave his residence as Readfield on the deed. George lived there until 1921 - several years as a widower. He served in the Civil War 1862-1863 and although enlisted for nine months he served out the entire year. He served as a postal clerk for 5 years on the Boston-Bangor route; then went to Massachusetts where he served as Stewart at Wilbraham Wesleyan Academy. He later spent winters in Meriden, CT but returned to his home in Readfield "during the warmer months". George died in 1942 at nearly 100 years of age, in Wilbraham, MA. The following was contributed by Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (48353502): George Russell enlisted 10 Sep. 1862 2nd Lieutenant 21st Maine Infantry company F. 5'9" blue eyes brown hair, honorably discharged 13 Oct. 1862. Member GAR Post #13, Dept. Maine.
