James Edward Gamble, Jr., 85, of Manning, South Carolina, widower of Margaret Jones Gamble and the last surviving charter South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agent, died Monday evening, September 17, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family and under the care of Amedisys Hospice. Born in Manning, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Sheriff James Edward Gamble and the late Maude Weatherford Gamble. "Pie," as he was affectionately known, was a lifelong, active member of the Manning United Methodist Church, where he was a member and former treasurer of the Margaret Jones Gamble Sunday School Class. He also served as a former member of the Official Board, Trustees and Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Pie began his law enforcement career in the fingerprint identification section at FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC. He was a United States Army veteran having served during World War II. He was a former owner and president of Clarendon Drugs in Manning. Pie was one of 46 original agents hired when SLED was formed in 1947. He retired as a Lieutenant in 1992. Lieutenant Gamble maintained his law enforcement certification for more than 65 years. He was a former commissioner of Public Works for the City of Manning for 15 years, serving 10 of those as chairman. Pie was a former County Chairman for the American Red Cross and served as a Trustee for Clarendon County School District Two for nine years. He was a member of St. Peters Lodge #54 AFM, the Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston, where he was also a Jester, a former member and president of the Civitan Club, and a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Williams-Burgess Post 68. Pop Pop, as he was known to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a very generous person to his family, friends, and strangers.
