Description	:	Last residence was 409 Serena Circle, Anderson. He was a member of the Belton First Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Barney D. Darby, Sr. and Martha Edmunds Darby. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Bettye" Stroman Darby; sons, Steven Stroman Darby and his wife Alison Ashley Darby and Joseph Eugene Darby all of Anderson; brother E. Steve Darby and his wife Judy; sister, Molly George Rich and her husband Gene, all of Anderson. A member of the elite drill platoon, the Summerall Guards, he graduated from the Citadel in 1958. ... He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Bettye" Stroman Darby; sons, Steven Stroman Darby and his wife Alison Ashley Darby and Joseph Eugene Darby all of Anderson; brother E. Steve Darby and his wife Judy; sister, Molly George Rich and her husband Gene, all of Anderson. A member of the elite drill platoon, the Summerall Guards, he graduated from the Citadel in 1958. After graduation, he began a ditinquished career in the U.S. Army, serving 22 years. He served two tours in Vietnam. For bravery, valor and exceptional service to his country, he was award the Soldier's Medal (see below), the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. During our country's 200th anniversary, he was a member of the Joint Service Review Board which was in charge of Bicentinnial activities. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and an honorary member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles. Upon retirement, he came an Anderson businessman and founded Darby Metalworks, Inc., where he served as president until his death. He was buried with full military honors at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Services were conducted by the Reverends T. Dale Lynch and Robert Beaver. Sullivan-King Mortuary Downtown Chapel 401 North Main St., Anderson. * The Soldier's Medal Award of the Soldier's Medal Date of Action: 20 July 1971 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Reason: For heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy: Major Darby distinguished himself by heroic action on 20 July 1971 while serving with Advisory Team 67, Third Regional Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, a serious fire threatened the destruction of a helicopter refueling point located at Fire Support Base Buttons. Major Darby's selfless and resolute actions quickly brought the dangerous situation under control and materially reduced the resulting damage to the helicopter refueling point and adjacent facilities. Disregarding his own safety, he repeatedly entered the fire area, assisting other members of a United States reaction force. The flames from two burning tankers and a fuel storage tank were flashing across the area, threatening three other tanker vehicles and the remaining storage tanks. Three other undamaged, fully loaded tanker vehicles were evacuated from the danger zone along with twenty barrels of aviation gasoline. Major Darby assisted in setting up a fire watch in the event of a sudden expansion by the fire. His leadership, tenacity, and vigorous execution contributed significantly to the protection and safeguarding of valuable vehicles and thousands of gallons of vital fuel needed for combat operations. Major Darby's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Colonel Darby was awarded the Soldier's Medal for voluntarily, at great risk to his own life, going into an exploding fuel/ammunition dump that had been attacked by the Viet Cong. LTC Darby risk his own life to rescue his injured soldiers. When asked why he did it, his answer was, "I had to, those were my soldiers." {A soldier's soldier!}
