Charles Riggin Dryden, a native of Crisfield and a former Mayor of the City, was buried with full military honors at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 20th, in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Officiating was the Rev. Draa S. Thompson, pastor of Stevens Memorial Baptist Church in Newport News. Services were held in the Jennell-Umphlett Funeral Home. Lt. Col. Dryden died Sunday, March 18th in the Palliative Unit of Kecoughtan Veterans Administration Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 68 years of age. Born in Crisfield, he was a son of the late Sherman E. Dryden and Florence Riggin Dryden. He served as Mayor of Crisfield from 1956 to 1962 and also as a city council member before moving with his family to Newport News. He was a member of Crisfield Lodge of Elks #1044. Col. Dryden retired as office manager for the B. F. Diamond Construction Co. in 1979 after 20 years of service. He retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Meade, Md. as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years in the military. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Thelma Mason Dryden, of Newport News; a daughter, Mrs. Cindy Lou Jergenson of Smithfield, Va.; a son, Charles R. Dryden, Jr. of Newport News; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Carman of Crisfield; two brothers, Register of Wills Littleton T. Dryden of Crisfield and James H. Dryden of Hollywood, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Attending the funeral from Crisfield were Littleton T. Dryden, Jerry McCready, and James T. Sterling, Jr., a member of the city council who represented the City of Crisfield.
