Description	:	John William Riely was born in Jefferson County, Virginia (now West VA)and received an education at Washington College (Washington & Lee University) Lexington, VA. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Riely organized a militia company named "The Liberty Hall Volunteers." The company was then mustered into the Fourth Regiment of Virginia of the Stonewall Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia with Riely serving as private. In the fall of 1862, he received a commission of Captaincy and was assigned to duty on the staff of Major-General G.W. Smith until the spring of 1863. He then transferred to the... Read More	John William Riely was born in Jefferson County, Virginia (now West VA)and received an education at Washington College (Washington & Lee University) Lexington, VA. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Riely organized a militia company named "The Liberty Hall Volunteers." The company was then mustered into the Fourth Regiment of Virginia of the Stonewall Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia with Riely serving as private. In the fall of 1862, he received a commission of Captaincy and was assigned to duty on the staff of Major-General G.W. Smith until the spring of 1863. He then transferred to the staff of Lt.-General James Longstreet and participated in the Pennsylvania Campaign and Battle of Gettysburg. He then was assigned to the CSA War Department as Assistant Adjutant General serving in the ranks of Major and Lt. Colonel. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1867 and served with Judge W.S. Barton at Fredericksburg, VA. In 1871, he was appointed attorney for the Commonwealth for Halifax County until in in 1894, he was elevated to Judge of the Supreme Court of Virginia where he served until his death January 20, 1900. He had married Emma L. Carrington in October 1867 and they had five children, 3 girls and 2 boys who were all living at the time of his death. (Thank you Roger L for this information.)
