Hardy, and Scott P. Hart. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery. A native of England, Mr. Bawden came to the U.S. and settled as a small child with his family in Centerville, a suburb of Butte. He attended schools in Centerville and Butte Business College before working for years on a Madison Valley Ranch. He was interrupted in his pursuit of higher education at Montana State College by World War I. He served overseas with the second field artillery in France. Following the Armistice, he held various jobs in Butte and was a student fireman with the Northern Pacific Railway for a time, and later, a letter carrier in Missoula. It was at this point that he decided to return to Montana State College, where in 1925, he was graduated with a degree in engineering. At college, he attained an enviable record as a footballl player, and acquired the nickname of "bonecrusher" Bawden. He is credited with some of the most sensational gridiron victories. After graduation, he moved to Poplar where he became high school mathematics teacher and football coach. On August 31, 1927, he was married in Putnam, Conn. to the former Esther Rouse, music teacher at the Poplar high school. While acting as football mentor at Poplar, Mr. Bawden attended a coaching school at Corvallis, Ore., conducted by the late Knute Rockne of Notre Dame University fame. Mr. Bawden began work as a maintenance engineer at Glendive for the Montana Highway Department in 1931. He was transferred to Helena in 1936 as equipment engineer. He was commissioned as captain after he enlisted in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. After cessation of hostilities, he returned to the highway department and was named in his present post in 1952. Surviving besides his widow are two children William E. Bawden, Jr., engineer for the Texaco Company at Anacortes, Wash., and Boyd R. Bawden, teacher at the West Side High SChool in Great Falls.
