Description	:	William M. "Bill" Thomas, 88, of East Palatka, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at Putnam Community Medical Center. A native of LaCrosse, he was a graduate of Alachua High School and was a 1942 graduate of the University of Florida. In 1942, he moved to Palatka, where he took a job as the agriculture teacher at the old Mellon High School. "Bill" Thomas, 88, of East Palatka, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at Putnam Community Medical Center. A native of LaCrosse, he was a graduate of Alachua High School and was a 1942 graduate of the University of Florida. In 1942, he moved to Palatka, where he took a job as the agriculture teacher at the old Mellon High School. In 1943, he left to serve in the U.S. Army during WW II and retired from the Army Reserves as a Lt. Colonel. He returned to his teaching job in 1946. In 1949, he was elected Putnam County Superintendent of Schools and served in that capacity until February of 1966. Having been instrumental in St. Johns River Community College locating in Palatka, he served as the Dean of Development and services at St. Johns until 1970. From 1970 to 1973, he was the assistant principal at Interlachen High School and in 1973 became the principal at Palatka Central High School, serving there until his retirement in July of 1977. After retiring and moving to Gainesville, he returned to Palatka in 1990. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Palatka, VFW Post No. 3349, American Legion Post No. 45, a member of the Retired Officers Association, a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Palatka, a member of the board of directors at Rodeheaver Boys' Ranch and also served as secretary in the State Superintendents' Association. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Scott Thomas. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Lucy Hudson Thomas of East Palatka; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Cary Crawford of Palatka; stepchildren, Ed Hudson of Tallahassee and Julie Hudson Rivers of Athens, Ga., and Becky Fehrenkamp of Palm Coast; brother, J. Bob Thomas of Wilmington, N.C.; three sisters, Mary Towers of LaCrosse, Elizabeth Waters and Rebecca Spires, both of Jacksonville; two granddaughters; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 22, at First Baptist Church in Palatka, with Rev. Charles T. Rabun, Jr. and Rev. Hardy B. Sandlin III officiating. Burial will be Wednesday at New Hope Cemetery near Brooker. Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka is handling arrangements. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd 21 Feb 2006.)
