Don Johnson, the son of Irving L. and Alma (Petersen) Johnson was born January 31, 1917 in Platte, SD. He graduated from Platte High School in 1934, and went on to attend Southern State Teacher's College for two years. Don taught for 5 years in the Platte, Geddes, SD and Lake Andes, SD areas. He received a Bachelor's Degree in teaching from the University of South Dakota in 1942. Don went on to graduate from Iowa State University in 1947 with a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture, while also serving as a part-time instructor.
On May 26, 1942, Don was united in marriage with Dorothy L. Kratochwill in Kimball, SD. Don served in the US Navy during World War II, earning the rank of Lieutenant. The couple moved to Sioux Falls in 1947. Don owned and operated Johnson Nursery for forty years, retiring in 1988. Don remained active in the local Rose and Horticulture Societies, including the Sioux Falls Garden Club, and the Sioux Falls Rose Society. Don was a member of the National Landscape Association, serving as President and receiving the Hall of Fame award in 1996; the American Association of Nurserymen and past president of the South Dakota Nursery Association; the American and South Dakota Horticulture Society; the board of McCrory Gardens in Brookings, SD; and the Sioux Falls Japanese Gardens and Sioux River Improvement Society.
Don was a charter member of St. Lambert Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the VFW, the Cosmopolitan Club, the Elks, and on the board of Governors for McCrossans Boy's Ranch.
Don and Dorothy enjoyed a winter home outside Phoenix, AZ, where Don took up golf. He also expanded his landscape drawing experience into other avenues, including painting and artwork.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorothy of Sioux Falls; his son, Dwight Johnson and his wife, Mary Lou of Stonington, CT; his granddaughter, Kate Johnson of Washington, DC; his brother, Morris Johnson and his wife, Leatrice of Platte, SD; his nephew, Rollie Johnson and his wife, Jean; his nieces, Shirley Roetman and her husband, Larry, Vicky Kopel and her husband, Todd, all of Platte; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dellas Johnson; and his sister-in-law, Marian.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, Sioux Falls Catholic School System, or McCrory Gardens of Brookings. |
