Description	:	Rex Lewis Parcels, Jr. was born January 16, 1945 in San Francisco, California, to Rex L. Parcels, Sr. and Florence Malik Parcels. He was raised in Berkeley, California, where he attended Cragmont School, Garfield Jr. High School, and Berkeley High School. He attended Contra Costa College and graduated from Humboldt State College in 1967 with a major in forestry. Rex was very athletic, earning a letter in water polo, and was an avid skier. Read More	Rex Lewis Parcels, Jr. was born January 16, 1945 in San Francisco, California, to Rex L. Parcels, Sr. and Florence Malik Parcels. He was raised in Berkeley, California, where he attended Cragmont School, Garfield Jr. High School, and Berkeley High School. He attended Contra Costa College and graduated from Humboldt State College in 1967 with a major in forestry. Rex was very athletic, earning a letter in water polo, and was an avid skier. During his school years, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Another activity that he enjoyed was singing in a male quartet. He was a member of the volunteer Emergency Unit at Humboldt State College. Rex enlisted in the US Naval Reserve in September, 1967, assigned to Miramar Naval Air Station. He earned his Navy wings in Pensacola, Florida. A member of Fighter Squadron 21, he was deployed to Vietnam on the carrier USS Ranger. On March 9, 1970, LTJG Parcels, flying as the Radar Intercept Officer in an F4J aircraft, lost radio contact with the USS Ranger over the Gulf of Tonkin. After an extensive search, no trace of the aircraft was ever found. He was awarded the Air Medal for his successful completion of 25 combat missions and 15 strikes in an active combat area. Rex was survived by his parents, and grandparents Lewis H. and Carrie Bernice Nigus Parcels of Hiawatha, and Benn and Molly Malik of Berkeley, A memorial service honoring his life will be held May 20, at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. Military honors will be a courtesy of 2nd BN, 130th FA, Kansas National Guard of Hiawatha. Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, is in charge of arrangements.
