Description	:	Lucian Clarence Neal was born 1846 in Chatham County, NC, the youngest of at least 7 known surviving children (5 boys/2 girls) born to "Unknown" Neal and his wife, Elizabeth (ca. 1806- aft 1860). Lucian's father died when he was young, and both he and his older brother William took to laboring in the fields early on to support their small family. He was only 15 years old when Civil War broke out, but he served as a Private with the 1st NC Junior Reserves. Lucien married in about 1871 in Chatham County to Keziah M. Caudle.... Lucian's father died when he was young, and both he and his older brother William took to laboring in the fields early on to support their small family. He was only 15 years old when Civil War broke out, but he served as a Private with the 1st NC Junior Reserves. Lucien married in about 1871 in Chatham County to Keziah M. Caudle. He was about 25 at the nuptials, and she about age 23. The couple resided in New Hope Township, Chatham County where he worked as a farm laborer. By 1880, the couple had removed to Patterson Township in Orange County, where he worked a small farm and they had 4 known children: * Lelia C. Neal (1878-1919) * Glendora Neal (1873-1890) * Mary "Mollie" Neal (1875-1951) * Clarence Neal (1879-1963) By 1900, the couple removed to South Street in Raleigh's 4th Ward, where Lucien opened a small grocery store. In 1907 Lucian was widowed when his wife of some 36 years died at about age 63. He survived her 12 years, passing in 1919 at age 73.
