HOUSE TAKEN FROM COON RAPIDS ENTERPRISE DECEASED WAS AN OLD TIME RESIDENT OF CARROLL COUNTY. Lucian House is dead. His departure was not unexpected. He was in failing health for years but uncomplainingly he bore his afflictions. Rheumatism made of him almost a cripple several years ago and advancing years added to his declining health. Of late he declined rapidly and examination by physicians discovered that he was afflicted with cancer of the bowels. For the past few weeks he suffered much pain, being confined at the home, of a daughter at Milford, where he passed away last Monday, October 8, 1917, in his 79th year, his wife preceding him several years ago. His remains were brought to Coon Rapids Monday night and were laid to rest beside those of his wife in the Coon Raids cemetery, funeral services being held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church,conducted by Rev. Miller in the presence of a large number of old time neighbors and friends. Lucian House was a real gentle man, and at all times. He loved his friends dearly and enjoyed their company. He was upright in all his dealings, companionable to a degree and of decided convictions as to one's duty and he lived up to these convictions as what a man's life should be as a helpful influence in one's community. He was a very modest man, never intruding himself but often sacrificing his pleasures to add to those of his friends. He was one of the oldest settlers of the community and a veteran of the civil war. He was one of the noted fifers of the nation, there being no better, and as a member of the Coon Rapids Veteran Drum Corps, played with the Corps for forty years helping to delight thousands for years past at G. A. R. National encampments state reunions and other gatherings. This is the first break by death in the membership of the original Veteran's Drum Corps, organized forty years ago by C. E. Morris, Geo. W. and T. J. Smith and the deceased, though Jacob Bowman and others joined later, but all in time dropped out by death but the four original members. Lucian House was born, in Hague, Warren county, New York, May 27, 1839, and died at his home at Milford, Iowa, October 8, 1917, aged 78 years, 4 months and 12 days. At 18 years of age he moved to Argo, Carrol county, Illinois, and enlisted at the age of 21 in the 34th Illinois Infantry, serving almost 4 years. He moved to Davenport, Scott county, Iowa, 1864. He was married to Miss Sarah A. Grace of DeWitt, lowa, in 1868. To this union were born seven children, Albert, of Verndale, Minnesota; Zetta, of Coon Rapids Iowa; Clara and Grace of Milford, Iowa, and Walter William and George who died in infancy. He moved to Carroll county, Iowa, in 1879, where he lived until the past few years. He was ready and willing to go to his reward. All his children were at his bedside when he passed away. One brother, N. G. House, and two sisters, Mrs. A. H. Blasdell and Mrs. Eunice Only [Olney] , survive. One of the deceased's wishes was that the surviving members of the Veteran Drum Corps sing a song at his funeral, which while it was a most trying thing for them to do they complied with their departed comrade's request—three only of the original twelve members - C. E. Morris, Geo W. and T. J. Smith. It was an affecting moment; these three old veterans, all past 75 years of age, singing at the parting with a member with whom they had been intimately associated years as musicians. - Coon Rapids Enterprise. Those from away to attend the funeral of the late Lucian House, at Coon Rapids, were Mr. and Mrs. Horace Coleman and son, Roy, of Estherville; Mrs. Lucy Jontz, of Grundy Center; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hewitt, of Ralston, Iowa. *Obituary is published in the Milford Mail, Oct. 18, 1917. ---------
