"Fiddling Lou" Mathieu, 88, of Westbrook, passed Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Barron Center in Portland, encircled by his family and listening to loved ones playing some of his favorite fiddle tunes. Lucien came into this world on July 11,1923, in Winslow as the first son of Joseph and Cecile (Roy) Mathieu. Lou joined the Air Force in 1942 after graduating from Winslow High School in 1941. "Fiddling Lou" Mathieu, 88, of Westbrook, passed Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at the Barron Center in Portland, encircled by his family and listening to loved ones playing some of his favorite fiddle tunes. Lucien came into this world on July 11,1923, in Winslow as the first son of Joseph and Cecile (Roy) Mathieu. Lou joined the Air Force in 1942 after graduating from Winslow High School in 1941. He proudly served our country until 1945, partaking in 35 bombing missions in his B-24 Liberator over enemy territory in Germany. Lucien survived multiple plane crashes and received the Air Force Air Medal as well as several other commendations for his service to his country. After World War II, on May 20, 1946, Lucien married the love of his life, Marie J. (Francoeur) Mathieu, who has been his wife for 65 years. He moved his family from Winslow to Westbrook in 1958, which is still home today. Lou learned the meat cutter trade and was meat manager for A&P for more than 20 years. Lucien became the meat cutters union Amalgamated Meat Cutters of America business agent and went on to become the president of the union until he retired in 1980. In 1992, Lucien L. Mathieu was appropriately inducted in the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame. Lucien is survived by his dearly loved wife of 65 years, Marie. Lou is also survived by his beloved son, Louis Mathieu and wife Maureen; and his dearest daughter, Marie Ann Trudel, and her husband, Jerry. Lucien's daughter-in-law, Brenda Mathieu; his dearly loved grandchildren, Kim Mathieu and Jayson Mathieu, his adored great-grandchild, Chloe Mathieu; his step-grandchildren Juliann, Sean, Melissa and Jameson; and seven step-great-grandchildren also survive Lou. Lucien was blessed with five brothers and three sisters. Brothers Henry and Maurice predeceased Lucien, while Normand and Anthony of Winslow and Lionel (Lee) of China Lake survive him. His sister, Yvette Poulin, predeceased Lou, while sisters Ann Roy and husband Domenic of Rockland, and Arlene Rulman and husband James of Westbrook, survive him. Interment will be in St. Hyacinth Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 9/7/2011)
