Read More	LUCILE MARIE VERCOE HUBBARD - Tuesday - March 30, 2004 Bellingham - Lucile Marie Vercoe Hubbard, 84, a sixty-eight year resident of Manson, died March 25, 2004, at Bellingham. She was born August 31, 1919, at Burlington, the daughter of William Henry and Edith (Thurman) Vercoe. Her big brother, Harold, and sister, Gertrude, welcomed her to their world and two years later, they all welcomed brother, Ralph, to the family. She had a wonderful time growing up in Skagit County with her family and many Vercoe and Thurman cousins. In 1934, the family moved to Chelan. The next year, the family moved to Manson, but Lucile continued school in Chelan by commuting with the science teacher and friends, Bob and Bill Evans and Ben Grandy. They graduated in 1937. She always loved to tell friends "she was an Old Goat!" After graduation, she packed apples in the fall and attended business school, in Seattle, that winter. When her family moved to Manson from Chelan, their home was across the street from the Dr. I.G. Hubbard family. The families became close friends and even closer when Lucile and George Wesley Hubbard married on July 23, 1939, at home in the Vercoe garden. In September, 1941, their daughter Charlotte was born and brother, George, was born in 1943. In 1957 her husband, Wes, died at home unexpectedly. After a time, she worked at Valley Hardware, Chelan, for 2-3 years, and then joined Seattle First National Bank in Chelan as proof machine operator. She then served as secretary and in customer service until her retirement in 1982, after nineteen years. In September, 2003, she moved to Bellingham for the winter to be closer to her family. For many years, Lucile packed apples each harvest and was proud to be one of the fastest ‘packers' in the area. She was active in the Manson United Methodist Church, a hospital volunteer, Camp Fire Leader for over fifteen years, member of the original Mother's Club, Muscular Dystrophy/Hospital Guild (E), Fortnightly, and The Manson Apple Blossom Festival. She and Wes helped design and build floats and worked with Anne Kaylor many times organizing and designing the Festival afternoon and evening programs. She also supported the Manson Fair for many years. She loved her family and was so proud of them. Survivors include daughter, Charlotte and husband, Bob Rehpohl of Hartwell, Georgia; son, George and his wife, Ann of Lynden, and children, Jason, of Lynden, and Lindsey Maxey, of Blaine. When Jason, her first grandchild, was born, Lucile was in the Chelan Hospital. Mel Hammer of Seattle First announced to friends "Lucile went into the hospital and came out a Grandmother!" Jason and Lindsay gave Lucile great joy, they were very close, and always called her "Big Grandma." It was especially exciting when Jason and Kristie gave Lucile her first great-grandchildren. Jasmine and Gracelyn Hubbard and then she became "Great Big Grandma." Other survivors include her brother, Ralph Vercoe, of Brooklyn, New York; brother-in-law, Elbert Hubbard of Manson; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will take place Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Manson United Methodist Church with Pastor Ed O'Dell officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Ray Bumgarner Museum in Manson or the Muscular Dystrophy/Hospital Guild in memory of the Hubbard/Vercoe families. Services are under the direction of Precht Rose Chapel, Chelan.
