Description	:	Lucille Ada Lundberg Engstrom Mrs. Bertil (Lucille) Engstrom, 79, of Clarinda died Wednesday afternoon, January 22, 1992 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital after a two year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) She was born May 9, 1912 at Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles Adrian and Ada Botilda Swanson Lundberg. On December 27, 1936 she was married to Bertil Engstrom, who survives. They farmed five miles north of Yorktown until moving into Clarinda 27 years ago. On December 27, 1936 she was married to Bertil Engstrom, who survives. They farmed five miles north of Yorktown until moving into Clarinda 27 years ago. Mrs. Engstrom is survived by her husband Bertil of the home and three children, Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Carlson, Austin Texas, Carol Pigg, Omaha, Nebraska, and Eugene and wife Tanya Engstrom of Toledo, Iowa. There are ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brothers and sisters, are Donald Lundberg, Modesto, California, Virgil Lundberg, Manilla, Philippines, Dwight Lundberg, San Clemete, California, Jim Lundberg, Essex, Iowa, Curtis Lundberg, Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Bob (Phyllis) Radil, Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Engstrom was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clifton. Services from Bethesda Lutheran Church near Clarinda, Iowa at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25, 1992, Rev. Mike Stadie, officiating. Ron Thomsen, Soloist, Miram Hanson, organist, Eleanor Freed, Register, ushers, Stanley Johnson and Douglas Johnson. Casket bearers were Derrin Pigg, Dana Pigg, Melissa Engstrom, Chris Carlson, Stacey Carlson, and Christina Engstrom, Final resting place, Bethesda Cemetery. Arrangements by Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Lutheran Church or the ALS Foundation. LUCILLE ENGSTROM "COOK OF THE WEEK" 'Both Lucille Engstrom and her husband Bertil are Swedish as far back as they can trace, so it seems logical that her specialties in the kitchen are Swedish. For Christmas, she makes Swedish bologna, meat balls, and Ost-Kaka, a special desert from milk which reminds some of its fans of cheesecake. Her mother and grandmother came from Sweden. Lucille reads Swedish and her husband understands quite a bit of it, so one of the highlights of their life was a trip to visit relatives in Sweden an 1977. "My mother and grandmother didn't have recipes she noted "although my mother did have a little notebook in which she listed ingredients for certain things, but no amounts." Her mother did not have a measuring cup until after she moved to town. She just used a teacup. "I don't know how things came out as well as they did" she said. Some of the things she learned to do by watching her grandmother, such as making Ost-Kaka, and she got plenty of practice cooking for six brothers and one sister as next to the oldest sibling. The Engstroms nearly always have homemade Swedish rye bread, and a supply of baked goods in the freezer. Her children and grandchildren look forward to coming to her home for Swedish foods. Their family includes three children, 10 grandchildren and one great- grandchild, all of whom live away from Clarinda. The Engstroms retired into town after 39 years on the same farm half way between Essex and Clarinda and are active at the Bethesda Lutheran Church. She has been helping with the Swedish dinner for many years and members vote whether to hold it each year.
