Nelson, 84, formerly of Concord, will be Saturday at the Concord Cemetery in Concord. 1932-2017 The family graveside service will follow a 1 p.m. potluck celebration of life Saturday at the Dixon Community Center in Dixon. Lucille Darlene Nelson was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Castana, Iowa, to Roy Mack and Fern (Riley) Livengood. She was born into eternal life Monday, May 15, 2017, surrounded by family at her home in Concord. Her sons and grandchildren hosted an early 85th birthday and celebration of life party Sunday, May 7, at St. Anne’s Parish Hall in Dixon, where Lucille was able to say goodbye to friends and family in her own inimitable style because as she was often fond of saying “I want to see people while I am alive, not when I’m dead.” The parish hall was beautifully scented with the fragrance of vases full of lilacs as guests enjoyed viewing pictures of Lucille and her family over the years, feasted on delicious salads and barbecue pork, shared a piece of birthday cake and took turns sharing favorite moments laughing and crying together with a dear friend, mother, aunt and grandmother. Lucille married Earl Charles Nelson in the late 1950s. Together they raised three boys in Concord. As a self-employed trucker, Earl relied heavily on his right hand gal to keep the phones answered and customers happy as she also tended to the details of a busy household. A lover of animals, children, birds and flowers, Lucille truly had a zest for life. Family was central to her and she relished time spent with all of them near and far. Lucille was never too busy to make frequent trips to visit her mother or sisters in Iowa and was always in regular communication with her siblings and their children through the years. If you wanted to know how aunts, uncles and cousins were doing, Lucille would be the one to ask. The joy was apparent in her face as she shared stories about her sons and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their accomplishments and latest adventures. Her home was a place where the grands were always welcome and found toys (and candy) ready and easily accessible to keep them entertained. A great sense of humor and playfulness graced Lucille’s personality, and she loved nothing more than to laugh and hear others laugh. After her boys were grown, Lucille filled her home with the laughter of many area children as she cared for them in her in-home daycare. She cared not about the house being a mess but rather that the children in her care laughed and had fun playing together. As these children grew older and had children of their own, Lucille’s family grew, as well. She also had an uncanny way of adopting “children” and becoming a mother figure to those lucky enough to be on the receiving end of her unconditional love. Lucille never knew great monetary wealth, but she shared with a generous heart and a giving spirit. She loved playing (and winning) Chinese Checkers, computer games on her tablet, read avidly and was a puzzle piecing champion. She will be sorely missed. Lucille is survived by her sons: Charles (Sandra) Nelson of Concord, Robert Nelson of Pender; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Earl Charles Nelson; a son, Scott Earl Nelson; sisters Irene Hanson, Iva Moore, Alice Callendar, Leora Claus, and Phyllis Helder; and her brother, Earl Edward Livengood.
