Schmal, 81, of Dubuque, formerly of Balltown, Iowa, and North Buena Vista area, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Balltown. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 20, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. She was born on Feb. 26, 1928, in Waupeton, Iowa, daughter of Peter "Freddie" and Katherine (Engling) Rolwes. She married Martin J. Schmal on May 3, 1948, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Balltown; he preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1984. Lucille was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Balltown for many years. Lucille enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, baking and cooking. She loved visiting with friends and relatives, whether it was on the phone or in person. Lucille was a homemaker and dearly loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Those left to honor her memory include her two children, Lisa K. Schmal, of Dubuque, and Steven J. Schmal, of North Buena Vista; her grandchildren, Nicholas D. (Sarah) Brimeyer and Elizabeth Brimeyer; her brother, Dick (Sandy) Rolwes, of Dubuque; two sisters-in-law, Shirley (Arnold) Meyer, of Dyersville, Iowa, and Louise Schmal, of Guttenberg, Iowa; and a brother in law, Elmer Ruden, of Dyersville. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Leon Rolwes, Norbert (Lucille) Rolwes and Elmer (Clara) Rolwes; her sister, Bernice (John) Riniker; three brothers-in-law, Ray Schmal, Clarence (Marie) Schmal and Aloysius Schmal; and three sisters-in-law, Katherine (Bill) Neumann, Helen (Art) Berg and Marie Ruden. Memorials may be given to the Lucille K. Schmal Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hoffmannschneiderfuneralhomes.com. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to all of Lucille's doctors, especially Dr. Heidi Townsend and Dr. John Whalen, as well as to all the staff on the third and fourth floors at Mercy Medical Center for their care of Lucille.
