She was the paternal granddaughter of Col. William Henry Haywood, Sr. & Charity Hare of Halifax Co, NC; and maternal granddaughter of wealthy planter, Philomen Hawkins III & Lucy Davis of Warren Co, NC. Lucinda married John W. Sasser of Wayne County on May 1, 1832. She was 19 years old, and he 29. There are many Sassers in Wayne and Johnston Counties, but very little is known about John Sasser, other than he was a planter, and the son of James Henry Sasser. John and Lucinda would have 10 known children, 7 of whom died young and are buried in Old City Cemetery: Dallas Haywood (1834-1835), William Haywood (1836-1837), Ann Eliza (1838-1839), Margaret (1839-1842), Philomen "Phil" Haywood (c. 1842), Delia (1844-1848), Mildred "Millie" (1847-1925), Ellen (c. 1848), James (1850-1850), and Sarah/Sally Blount (1851-1851). Lucinda was widowed in 1854 when her husband of 21 years passed at age 51. She removed to Raleigh and never remarried, surviving another 40 years, passing in 1894 at age 75. Of her 3 children who survived infancy, only 2 married and had children: Philomen, Mildred and Ellen. Philomen "Phil" married Hannah Moore Scott and had 5 sons. Mildred married Dr. James McKee of Raleigh and had 6 sons. Both these children and their spouses are buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh. Her last surviving child, Ellen (aged 21), was last found in 1870 living with her mother in Raleigh. She may have married, but no further information was found on her after 1870.
