Suggested edit: Obituary published in Manchester Press on Thursday, September 3, 1931 Title: Mrs. Hempstead Dies at Cedar Falls Mrs. John Hempstead, one of the oldest residents and a pioneer of Delaware county, died Friday at the home of Eldon Grapp, near Cedar Falls. To the very end she was the same little woman in the white lacey cap that she was 20 years ago, and there was hardly a wrinkle in her face to mark her life of almost a century. Her thought was clear and her mind clear to the very end, which is unusual for one of her advanced years. Lucinda Wilcox, the eighth and youngest child of Thomas and Elizabeth Wilcox, was born at Ripley, Chautauqua county, N. Y., Oct. 2, 1834. Her mother died when she was but two years old, and she grew to womanhood under the care of her sisters, Elizabeth adn mary Ann, who in her early youth became Mrs. Calvin and Mrs. Nelson Fenner. In 1854 she came west with them and their families, early settlers in a new land. With their horses and three wagons they shipped by rail to Freeport, Ill., whence they drove to Dubuque and were ferried across the river. It rained continually and six days were required for this little band, with their freighted wagons, to each the home of the Fenner brothers' sister, Mrs. Rober Carrier, west of Edgewood. The 77 years of life since then had not dimmed Mrs. Hempstead's memory of Iow stage coach roads after a rainy season. The new comers made their first home in a log house with neither doors nor windows, not far from their sister. A blanket served for a door. That this "shanty" might accomodate the two families, a floor of split logs was made for a loft. This became the sleeping quarters and a rough ladder was used for the stairs. Those early pioneers attended church in the little log schoolhouse at Strawberry Point, where the then Jane Wicks (later Mrs. R. W. Tirrill) was teacher. The seats were made of split logs supported by wooden pegs. Rev. Charles True, father of C. H. True of Edgewood, who just celebrated his 84th birthday, and Rev. Newell W. Bixby, father of R. J. Bixby, also of Edgewood, were the ministers. Dubuque was the nearest market for their produce and with the exception of a little store run by "Uncle" Jimmy Belknap at Yankee settlement, was the only source of supplies. Lucinda Wilcox continued to make her home with her sisters and a brother, Albert, of Maquoketa, until Feb. 22, 1859, when she married the friend of her girlhood days in New York, John Hempstead. For this occasion they borrowed the only buggy in the community from Allan Mead of north of Manchester, and drove to Rockville, then a town six miles east of Delhi where [illegible] H. Taylor officiated at the ceremony. Mr. Hempstead then owned what is now the Sly farm, adjoining the Mead cemetery north of Manchester, and this, their first home, was the birthplace of their two children, Sylvia Elizabeth and Ruth, whose presence gladdened their lives but a few years. Mr. and Mrs. Hempstead lived continually in Delaware county near Manchester with the exception of three spent in Kansas, until 1912, when he left her to join their daughters. Since then she lived principally with her nieces and nephews in her home community, eight years in the home of Bradford Fenner. Five years ago she took up her home with Mr. and Mrs. Almer W. Fenner at Cedar Falls and soon became totally blind. Here she lived until a year ago, when she went to the home of their daughter, Edith Grapp, where her death came quickly and peacefully Aug. 21st, at the age of 97 years and ten months. Funeral services were held in Cedar Falls, Sunday afternoon, Aug 23, at 1:30 o'clock. Rev. Mr. Russell of the Cedar Falls Christian church had charge of the services. Burial was made in the Mead cemetery north of Manchester. Mrs. Hempstead was a devout member of the Christian church and from her early youth was an active Christian worker. Her remarkable faith and trust grew stronger with her blindness. She was a great reader and was ever interested in the affairs of the day. She was fond of company and almost to the hour of her blindness was ever busy with the work of her hands, especially needlework. Nephews and nieces surviving are: Will, Frank, and Mrs. Mary Crawford, of northeast Pennsylvania; Albert Wilcox, Waterloo; George Wilcox, Central City; Mrs. Ed Newcomb, Manchester; Mrs. Alma R. Beyer-Jones, Edgewood; George Fenner, St. Louis, Mo., Bradford Fenner, Burwell, Neb.
