Dan Shapley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military Honors. The casket will be placed in the church at 4 p.m. Wednesday. He was born Nov. 6, 1927, in Orangeburg County, the son of the late Daniel McMichael Smoak Jr. and Gena Gramling Sauls Smoak. He was a lifelong member of Prospect Southern Methodist Church and retired in 1989 from the Department of Public Utilities, where he worked as a natural gas superintendent. After retirement, he worked at Ace Hardware and volunteered at TRMC. He was a member of the Progress Masonic Lodge No. 356, the Garden City Antique Car Club, the Edisto Cruiser Car Club and the Gold Wing Road Riders. He enjoyed numerous motorcycle trips with his nephew, Brooks Jackson, as they toured California, Mexico and Alaska. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Williams Smoak; two sons, Richard and wife, Donna, Smoak of Orangeburg, Neal and wife, Debbie, of Lexington; a daughter, Cheryl Trahan and husband, Bruce, of Seguin, Texas; stepchildren, Robert Williams of Ridgewood, N.J., John Cochrane of Sacramento, Calif., and Kathy Williams of China; grandchildren, Connie Goldsmith, Jennifer Smoak, Rachael Zimmer, Daniel Smoak and Jamie Smoak; step-grandchildren, Michelle Paulchel, Felder John, Ben Williams and Dorothy Trahan; great-grandchild, Vince Goldsmith; step-great-grandchildren, Jessica Michael and Ashlee Paulchel. He enjoyed life and was loved by all who knew him. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home Inc. of Orangeburg. Memorials may be made to Prospect Southern Methodist Church, Missions, 585 Waterspring Road, Orangeburg, SC 29118.
