Her aunt Elizabeth was also married to John's uncle William. -------------------------------------------- Death of Mrs. J.W. Penn Occurred at Her Home Near Waubeek January 6, 1901 Lucy A. Ellis, daughter of Levi and Mary Jane Ellis, was born near Waubeek, Linn Co., Iowa, November 15, 1862. She has always lived in the neighborhood in which she was born and therefore all the characteristics of her life are known and well understood by her friends. Her childhood life was peculiarly adapted to clean living and pure thinking, having been spent in company with her parents and brothers and sisters upon a farm. Miss Ellis obtained her education in the district schools and in Cornell college, which education was sufficient to enable her to pursue successfully for a number of years, the profession of school teaching. The career as teacher was not only exemplified by the ability to win and hold the respect of the pupils instructed, but in the homes where board and lodgings were obtained, her genial and affable nature found its way into the hearts and lives of those with whom she temporarily lived, and one man has said to the writer repeatedly, "Lucy boarded with us so long we think of her as a daughter." On March 28, 1889, she was united in marriage to J.W. Penn. This marriage was blessed of God, and these two having plighted their love, set to work with a will to establish for themselves a home, and day by day, and year by year, in united loving consecration, they worked and planned for the consummation of this righteous desire, which under a providential guidance they were carrying to a successful issue. This home - how many of us have enjoyed its kindly hospitality, and our hearts ache today as we ask ourselves the question, "why should a home like this, be bereft and saddened by a sorrow so deep as death?" Religiously Mrs. Penn became a Christian when a girl of 16 years and united with the M.E. church, and it needs no eulogy to say that her life has been characterized by all those attributes which go to make up a true Christian womanliness; no act in her life ever belied her Christian profession. Now while the great loss of losses, is to be sustained by her devoted husband, who has lost his dearest friend, his constant companion, and most loyal advisor [sic], it will not seem like cruelty to say to him, my brother, the church, society and all her host of friends will miss her too, and we can and will all unite in saying, "Dearest Lucy thou hast left us, and our loss we deeply feel, But 'tis God that has bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal. Yet again we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, When in heaven with joy we greet thee, Where no farewell tears are shed." We can never tell with what feelings we received the news but a few days ago that Mrs. Lucy Penn was seriously ill, and then in such a few days of her death which occurred Sunday, January 6, 1901. -obituary, Springville [Ia.] New Era (Jan. 16, 1901)
