Marquis, daughter of Joseph and Mary Pace, was born near the city of Richmond in the state of Virginia, on the 5th of September, 1828, and departed this life April 17, 1916, at the home of her son, William Marquis, near Woodburn, Iowa, aged 87 years, 7 months and 12 days. Marquis, daughter of Joseph and Mary Pace, was born near the city of Richmond in the state of Virginia, on the 5th of September, 1828, and departed this life April 17, 1916, at the home of her son, William Marquis, near Woodburn, Iowa, aged 87 years, 7 months and 12 days. She was the oldest child of a family of nine children, 5 daughters and 4 sons, all of whom have proceeded her to the great beyond, except one sister, Mrs. Mary Drury of Cainsville, Mo. She was fourteen years of age when her mother died, her father dying in 1884. She was united in marriage to William W. Marquis in Ohio on the 30th day of October, 1847. To this union was born ten children, eight boys and two girls, those who survive her are J. T., W. P. and J. B. Marquis living near Woodburn, Ia., A. B. Marquis of Gowrie, Iowa, and Eliza Wolfe of Macksburg, Iowa. Those who have departed this life are James and Albert who died quite young, Melvina Wolfe dying in 1883, Charles and John Marquis dying in 1895 and 1908, her husband departed this life at the age of forty-six years. She was converted at the age of thirteen and united with the Baptist church. After coming to Ohio she and her husband united with the Methodist church; then moving from Ohio to Henry county, Iowa in 1856 and in 1858 came to Clarke county where she lived until her death. In 1867 she with her husband were charter members with the Christian Union Church of Bethel Chapel, and was a faithful member until her death. Home, home, she cried exulting, death is a glorious birth; Then gently slipped her shackles and fled away from earth; The angels caught her softly, and bore her up the steep, The golden gates closed behind her, and we remain to weep. Beside my grave, O weep not; nor say I'm lying there, Turn up your face heavenward, into the sun-lit air; Think how I'm far above you, in the everlasting spring, In the Imperial City, and presence of the King. The trumpet note of welcome is always on the blast, It has no time to die away, the souls come in so fast, Then faint not ye beloved, but let hope conquer sorrow, These golden gates shall open and let you in tomorrow. Funeral services were held at Bethel Chapel church conducted by N. D. Gordon of Indianola, Iowa, and she was laid to rest in the Bethel cemetery.
