She, with her parents, removed to Illinois when she was but five years of age, settling in La Salle county. On November 24, 1852, she was united in marriage with Arrounah Mosely Niles. Two daughters, Harriet A. and Mary Josephine, the wife of R. M. Rankin, survive her, her only son, Ira H., having died January 30, 1905. In February, 1880, Mrs. Niles, with her husband and children, came to Nebraska and settled in Ulysses, where she resided until June, 1905. Since that time she has made her home in York with her daughter, Mrs. Rankin, but her heart has always been loyal to her friends in Ulysses. Formerly Mrs. Niles was a member of the Presbyterian church, but after her removal to Ulysses she became a member of the Congregational church of this place. In her younger days Mrs. Niles was very active in both her church and social life and was a general favorite in the community in which she resided. Just six weeks ago Mrs. Niles was taken ill and during that time has been the most patient of sufferers, thinking always of others, and never ceasing to hope that she would soon recover. Impressive funeral services were held in the Congregational church in this city, conducted by Rev. J. B. Stocking, pastor of the church, last Thursday forenoon. Rev. Stockin took his text from I. Phillipians, the text being, "To die is gain." The floral offerings were both numerous and beautiful, emphasizing the devotion in which the deceased was held by her old friends and neighbors. The choir selections consisted of "Abide With Me," "Rock of Ages" and "Jesus Lover of My Soul," hymns which had always been favorites of the deceased, and which were beautifully rendered. Death was caused from cancer of the stomach, from which Mrs. Niles had suffered long and uncomplainingly. Interment was in Ulysses cemetery.∼There is a small headstone to the left of the Niles headstone with the initials AMN which may stand for a deceased infant of Lucy and Araunah Niles.
