The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the old Howell home on Locust Street, now the property of Mr. M. D. Howell, where deceased had resided since the health of her husband, the late William Thomas, who passed away in the early 80's. The brief, yet sweetly solemn service was conducted by Rev. W. F. Blevins, assisted by Rev. S. S. Key, Rev. Chas. F. Wilkins and Rev. Eli Myers, the latter, now pastor of the North Little Rock Methodist Church, being for a number of years pastor of the local church. At the conclusion of the service at the home, the long funeral cortage wended its sorrowful way to Brearley Cemetery-- our sacred, silent city of the dead, in whose confines so many of us have loved ones sleeping; and to whose care and beautifying, first as member and later as President of the Cemetery Association, Mrs. Thomas had devoted long years of labor and there, neath a mantle of beautiful blossoms, fragrant emblems of the love and esteem of her neighbors and friends, "the mortal remains" of this noble Christian lady were tenderly lowered into the somber tomb, there to rest until on the glorious morning of the Resurrection she, and those who like her have followed in the footsteps of the meek and lowly Nazarene, are called in glorious reunion on that other shore where life is eternal and joy everlasting. Death at any time is sad, whether the departing one be enveloped in the golden glimmer of youth or draped in the silver mantle of age; but somehow the beautiful life and the sublime faith of Mrs. Thomas robs the visit of the "Grim Reaper" of much of it's tragedy and recalls the comforting query, "O grave, where is thy sting". Mrs. Thomas was a native of Dardanelle, the fourth child born to Judge and Mrs. H. A. Howell, an early pioneer family yet prominent in the affairs of Western Arkansas. She was born March 16th, 1853, at the then Howell home on Front Street whose memory is yet cherished, along with that of the famous old willow tree which graced its spacious lawn. Mrs. Thomas, then Miss Lucy Howell, was united in marriage on January 18th, 1881, to Mr. William Thomas, who lived but two years. To this union two children were born, only one of whom, Mrs. John Stirman, of this city, survives. In early girlhood Mrs. Thomas united with the Methodist church and contnued a faithful, zealous member to the hour of her death. She took an active interest in the work of her church, for many years being a teacher in the Sunday School, and her whole life was a beautiful and inspiring example of true Christian character. Beside her daughter, Mrs. Thomas is survived by three brothers: R. H. Howell, of Russellville and J. W. and M. D. Howell, of Dardanelle; also four sisters: Mrs. Mattie Hill, of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Amanda Harmon, Mrs. Etter Johnson and Mrs. Lela Howell Harrower of Dardanelle. Out of town relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Howell and two daughters, of Russellville; Mrs. M. L. Hill of Memphis; Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Howell and son, of Plainview; Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Jackson, Mrs. C. C. Conlee, Mrs. Virgil Jackson, of Little Rock; Rev. and Mrs. Eli Myers, of North Little Rock; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rorex, Judge and Mrs. R. J. Wilson, and daughter, Mrs. Ganner, Mrs. Lucy Luker and daughter, Mrs. Mildred Love Morton, Russellville; Dr. John Grace and daughter, of Belleville; Mrs. Sam Loupe and Mr. and Mrs. John Roberts, of near Chickalah.
