Her death occurred just two months following the burial of her husband, Wallace M Howie, who passed away Feb. 7th. Mrs. Howie had been in failing health for some time and after the death of her husband her condition became greatly aggravated. She was taken critically ill about a month ago and ten days before her death was removed to the Akron hospital where she submitted to an operation but her vitality was so low that she was unable to rally from the ordeal. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Hawarden, conducted by Dr. Robt. H. Forrester, the pastor. Music was provided by a quartette composed of Mrs. W. S. Weaver, Mrs. Nellie Wood, Miss Edith Bennett and Mrs. Orrin Harris with Mrs. Earl Slife as accompanist. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery beside the newly made grave of her husband. The pall bearers included George Schafer, Chris Schiefen, Audie Degan, Arthur Laudi, E. W. Homer and W. J. Kelley. Members of the Royal Neighbor Lodge of Chatsworth attended the funeral in a body. Lulu Edna Truesdell was born at Poynette, Wis., Sept. 20, 1875, and died at the Akron hospital April 9, 1932, at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 19 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in the year 1881 and the family located on what is known as the Ward farm, a mile northeast of the present town of Chatsworth. They came by rail to LeMars and then drove across country in a cutter. Calliope was their nearest town, Hawarden and Chatsworth having not yet been founded. Since then her home for the most part has been in this community. There were three other children in the family. One brother, Fred Truesdell, who was born in Poynette, Wis., preceded her in death, while her two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Ofstad and Mrs. Vivian Buehler, were born near Hawarden. The parents died when the children were all young, Vivian, the youngest sister being but 2 years of age. Prior to her marriage to Wallace M. Howie on Jan. 30, 1907, she had been employed for a time in the post office at Poynette, Wis., but their entire married life was spent in Chatsworth where they were highly respected and enjoyed the friendship of all. Mrs. Howie was appointed postmistress at Chatsworth about seven years ago and was still filling this position at the time of her death. She discharged the duties of the office with efficiency and her courteous and accommodating manner commanded public esteem. She was baptized in the Baptist church in her youth. She united with Clover Leaf Camp No. 8250, Royal Neighbors of America, on Feb. 10, 1919, about two years after the Camp was established in Chatsworth. She held several of the important offices in this lodge during the time of her membership and served as recorder from 1925 to 1929. Mrs. Howie always radiated cheerfulness and greeted her friends with a cheery word and a smile. She was a kind and sympathetic neighbor, her concern always being for the welfare of others about her. Her own afflictions she bore with marked patience and fortitude. Her passing will be sincerely mourned by many friends outside the family circle. She is survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Ofstad of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. John Buehler of Odebolt, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Buehler were here to attend the funeral, but Mrs. Ofstad, who has been ill, was unable to be present. People from a distance who attended the funeral were Dr. and Mrs. C.L. Roland of Humboldt, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Schumacher, Mr. and Mrs. John Schumacher, H.T. Schumacher, Mrs. Belle Schumacher and Lloyd Dowd of Sioux City and Miss Edith Bennett of Alton.
