Description | : | Civil War Confederate Army Major General. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1856 and served as an officer in the 2nd Calvary regiment. After the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and was appointed a Captain on the staff of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. He later was promoted Colonel serving as Inspector General the staff of Major General Benjamin McCulloch and led 11th Virginia Cavalry regiment at the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg.
